Contreras (elbow) was added to the Padres' 40-man roster Friday.
Contreras was protected from the Rule 5 draft despite the fact that he's yet to pitch above Low-A. He hasn't pitched since 2019 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he's expected to be ready to go for spring training.
