Williams, the 37th overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft, signed for a $1.85 million bonus Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The competitive-balance pick's deal checked in just below the $1,999,300 slot value. Williams was lauded as the best defensive collegiate infielder in this year's draft by Baseball America, but there are questions about his offensive ceiling. With no expected minor-league season this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Williams' professional development will be delayed to an extent.
