Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. Fernandez will add bullpen depth for Detroit following the loss of Blaine Hardy (forearm) to the 10-day injured list. Fernandez has compiled a 2.89 ERA with eight strikeouts over 9.1 innings this season for the Mud Hens.
The Tigers optioned Fernandez to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. Before being claimed off waivers by the Tigers this offseason, Fernandez reached the big leagues for the first time in 2018 as a September callup for the Blue Jays. Over 13 appearances, the reliever surrendered seven runs on 10 hits and four walks across 10.1 innings. Though the bullpen has been a weakness for the Tigers for a while, Fernandez will first need to impress in the minors before getting a look with the big club.
Fernandez was claimed off waivers by the Tigers on Friday. Fernandez spent the month of September up in the big leagues for Toronto after working at the Triple-A level for a majority of the season. In 13 appearances with the Blue Jays, he allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out six in 10.2 innings of relief. The 25-year-old could use a little more seasoning in the minors but should have a chance to win a major-league roster spot in spring training.
