    • Lowther was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday. Reports from Sunday indicated that Lowther was bound for the bullpen, but it turns out he'll actually be heading to the minors. His start Saturday against the Red Sox didn't exactly make a strong case for him sticking around, as he allowed seven runs on seven hits while recording just seven outs. Keegan Akin was recalled in a corresponding move.

    • Manager Brandon Hyde said Sunday that Lowther will likely move to the bullpen for the time being, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Baltimore has yet to finalize its rotation heading into a six-game week, but it apparently won't include Lowther, who was lit up by Boston for seven earned runs in 2.1 innings in his first career MLB start Saturday. Due to off days Thursday and May 17, the Orioles could choose to get by with a four-man rotation until at least May 22.

    • Lowther (0-1) took the loss Saturday as the Orioles were trounced 11-6 by the Red Sox, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and two walks over 2.1 innings. He struck out three. The rookie lefty got through the first inning of his first big-league start unscathed, but things went downhill rapidly for Lowther after that. He tossed 40 of 65 pitches before getting the hook, and Baltimore may consider other options rather than give the 25-year-old another turn in the rotation.

Lowther's promotion to the majors was expected after the left-hander was named the starter for Saturday's matchup against Boston. Lowther allowed one hit and no walks while striking out one in a scoreless relief inning during his major-league debut.
