Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes started at shortstop Friday and is scheduled to start at second base Saturday. He also began working out at third base last weeked as the team prepares him for a utility role.

"He's going to move around. He's going to play second, third. You can read into it whatever you want," manager Clint Hurdle told MLB.com. "We're going to move him around that utility/middle position. We're going to move him around and get him more exposure at other places."

Barmes spent the last three seasons almost exclusively at shortstop, but he said recently he's "excited for the chance to move all over." The team is moving forward with Jody Mercer as its starting shortstop.
