Phillies starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone may not pitch again this season, as general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told reporters he will be shut down from throwing for three to six weeks.
Pettibone is dealing with shoulder inflammation but no structural damage, so the prescription for his recovery is rest. With just six weeks left in the season, there may not be enough time for him to get back up to speed, even if he hits the optimistic projection of three weeks without throwing.
Pettibone has been on the disabled list since early August. He has a 4.00 ERA in 18 starts for the season.
