The Padres have released the following statement on shortstop Everth Cabrera:
“We were made aware of an incident involving Everth Cabrera this week, and we take this matter very seriously. We are in the process of gathering information and are in communication with Major League Baseball. We refrain from further comment at this time.”
Without context, that might seem a bit odd. The context is that TMZ.com is reporting that Cabrera was arrested early Wednesday morning on suspicion of driving while under the influence, and in this case, the report indicates the substance in question is allegedly marijuana.
There's no official word yet, but that's what is being reported.
If true, Cabrera has had a pretty rough time since becoming an All-Star in 2013. He was suspended for 50 games to end last season due to his involvement with the Biogenesis scandal, this season he's hitting just .232/.272/.300 (66 OPS+), is currently on the disabled list with a hamstring issue and now this.
