The Tigers have designated reliever Joba Chamberlain for assignment Friday.
It's been a rough run lately for Chamberlain, who was in his second season with the Tigers. He had a 1.06 ERA as of June 16, but he posted a 14.40 ERA in his last seven appearances, raising his season ERA to 4.09.
"I know Joba struggled here recently at the end, but without Joba, we don't win the division last year. Simple as that," manager Brad Ausmus said, per MLive.com.
Chamberlain was a popular figure with the Yankees and a stellar reliever very early in his career. He was moved to the rotation full-time in 2009 with New York, but his time as a starter lasted only one season before he was back in the bullpen.
Since returning to a relief role in 2010, he is 10-12 with a 4.06 ERA in 266 appearances.
