  • Reds' Derek Law: Back with Cincinnati

Law re-signed Monday with the Reds on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to MLB spring training. Law elected free agency in November after the Reds dropped him from their 40-man roster, but he'll be rejoining the organization in 2023 and will get the chance to battle for a spot in the big club's Opening Day bullpen. The 32-year-old right-hander made 17 appearances in the majors in 2022 between Cincinnati and Detroit, logging a 4.12 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB across 19.2 innings.

  • Reds' Derek Law: Designated for assignment

Law was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday. Splitting time between Detroit and Cincinnati last season, Law was dominant out of the bullpen, recording a 1.13 ERA through his first 13 appearances. His ERA then shot up to 17.18 over his final four appearances. Should Law clear waivers, he will have to regroup in Triple-A before the Reds bring him back into their bullpen.

Law (2-3) took the loss against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit with one walk over 1.2 innings. He struck out two. Law relieved Nick Lodolo to begin the sixth and went 1-2-3 through the first hitters he faced. The right-handed reliever returned in the seventh and appeared to be cruising to another 1-2-3 inning before surrendering a two-out homer to Seiya Suzuki to put the Reds down 2-1. Law has now allowed five runs over his last two appearances, taking the loss each time.

In his first appearance for the Reds, Law entered the game in the fifth inning with the team leading 4-1 and tossed two scoreless innings. The veteran signed a minor-league deal with Cincinnati on Aug. 14 after being designated for assignment by Detroit earlier in the month. It was his first win since 2019 when he was a member of the Blue Jays.

  • Reds' Derek Law: Gets call to majors

The Reds selected Law's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. Law will take over the 40-man roster spot and 26-man active roster spot of fellow reliever Ross Detwiler, who was designated for assignment after serving up five earned runs across 2.1 innings between his most recent two appearances. During his upcoming stint with Cincinnati, Law will likely be used in a lower-leverage capacity out of the bullpen.

  • Derek Law: Becomes free agent

Law elected free agency Sunday after clearing waivers. After evaluating his options upon clearing waivers, Law determined he was better off exploring the open market than accepting an outright assignment to the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate in Toledo. Before being booted off the 40-man roster Thursday, Law made two appearances out of the big-league bullpen and was charged with five runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk over two innings.

  • Tigers' Derek Law: Links up with Tigers

Law agreed with the Tigers on a minor-league contract Saturday, Jared Purcell of MLive.com reports. Law spent the 2021 campaign in the Twins organization, appearing in nine games at the big-league level before finishing the season at Triple-A St. Paul and being outrighted off the 40-man roster in September. He then elected free agency in the offseason, missing all of spring training before signing with Detroit. Law will stick around at the Tigers' extended spring training facility in Florida to complete his buildup program before likely joining the team's Triple-A affiliate in Toledo later this month. The 31-year-old right-hander has covered 181.1 innings over parts of five seasons in the majors, accruing a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.

Law cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports. Law had been on the 10-day injured list since July 17 due to a right shoulder impingement before being designated for assignment Sunday. • Twins' Derek Law: DFA'd Sunday

The Twins designated Law for assignment Sunday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Law, who's been on the injured list since July 17 with a right shoulder impingement, loses his 40-man roster spot to allow for Luke Farrell's return from the 60-day IL. Law has been decent with a 4.20 ERA in 15 relief innings this season, but his injury makes him unlikely to get claimed on waivers in the next couple days.

He's recorded an 8.53 ERA and 2.68 WHIP in 6.1 innings across five appearances with the Twins in 2021, and he should serve mainly as a low-leverage reliever after right-hander Matt Shoemaker was designated for assignment.

  • Twins' Derek Law: Contract selected by Twins

Law's contract was selected by the Twins on Saturday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. Law failed to break camp with the major-league club this year, but he'll join Minnesota's bullpen as part of a shuffle after right-hander Cody Stashak was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul and Travis Blankenhorn was designated for assignment. • Twins' Derek Law: Fails to win job

Law will not break camp in the big leagues, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Law threw eight scoreless innings this spring, striking out 13 batters while walking three and allowing three hits, but it wasn't enough earn him a roster spot. The fact that he's not on the 40-man roster certainly didn't help his case. He could be one of the team's top depth options this season, though the lack of a 40-man spot will hurt him there as well.

  • Twins' Derek Law: Contending for bullpen spot

Law has pitched well enough during Graperfruit League play to potentially garner an Opening Day bullpen spot, manager Rocco Baldelli told MLB.com. Law has thrown six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and one walk this spring. Law would seem to be a longshot, but the Twins may have found a way to improve his mechanics. Law didn't receive a call-up to the majors at any point in 2020 after being included in the Rangers' 60-man player pool, but the reliever made 58 appearances for the Blue Jays in 2019, compiling a 4.90 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. He'd likely work in middle relief if he does make the final roster, but he would need to be added to the 40-man roster considering he was a non-roster invitee to spring training.

  • Rangers' Derek Law: Part of pool

Law was named to the Rangers' 60-man player pool Sunday. Law, who is not on the 40-man roster, has 167 games of MLB experience over the last four seasons with the Giants and Blue Jays. He was used to close some games for Toronto when closer Ken Giles dealt with an elbow injury and was away on a paternity leave. Many relievers would need to be hurt for the Rangers to turn to Law as a closer, but his experience could make him one of the first callups should an injury hit the bullpen. The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 4.90 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 67:40 K:BB ratio over 60.2 innings in 2019.
