Grisham is said to be "pretty deep into his running progression," which is the most significant part of his recovery from a right hamstring strain. He's also been hitting and doing other baseball activities. Grisham has already been ruled out from returning to action during the regular season, but if he continues to progress, he could be activated at some point during the playoffs.

The veteran outfielder landed on the shelf in early September due to a hamstring strain, and it appears he won't be rejoining the active roster during the final week of the regular season. Grisham has a .703 OPS in 483 plate appearances this year and a .170/.261/.352 slash line in 45 games since the All-Star break, so he may not reclaim a starting role even if he's added to the postseason roster.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Grisham (hamstring) is "up to a pretty decent speed" in his running progression and is also doing other baseball activities, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
When Grisham was diagnosed with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain in early September, Boone conceded that the outfielder could miss the remainder of the regular season. A return remains up in the air, but Grisham has given himself a chance with how he's progressed in his rehab. Spencer Jones is slashing .361/.425/.528 in 10 games since taking over for Grisham in center field, and Jones could keep the starting job even if Grisham does make it back.

Grisham might have had a chance at returning from the injured list when first eligible Sept. 15 if he was tending to a Grade 1 strain, but the moderate-grade strain likely takes a minimum-length stay on the shelf off the table. While Grisham is out, Spencer Jones appears likely to shift over from a corner spot to serve as the Yankees' primary center fielder. Heliot Ramos and Jasson Dominguez should see more opportunities in the corner outfield as a result, though both will lose out on playing time once Aaron Judge (rib) returns from the IL, perhaps as soon as the upcoming week.
