  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Optioned to Triple-A

Avila was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Friday. After giving up three earned runs through 3.2 innings during spring training, Avila's chance at cracking the big-league roster has come and gone. The 26-year-old righty spent nearly all of last season in Triple-A, logging a 4.58 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 112 innings of work.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Joins big-league roster

Avila had his contract selected by the Padres on Thursday. Avila appeared in big-league games last season but spent most of the year at Triple-A El Paso. He appeared in 30 games for the affiliate and had a 4.58 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 124:49 K:BB across 112 innings.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Outrighted to Triple-A

Avila cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Monday. Avila was sent down after serving as the 27th man during a doubleheader in early May, and he'll now lose his spot on the 40-man roster while remaining in the organization. Over seven appearances (five starts) in El Paso, he's posted an 8.10 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 23.1 innings.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Called up as 27th man

Avila was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to serve as the 27th man in Wednesday's doubleheader against the Guardians. Avila was sent down by the Padres on Sunday, but he'll provide an additional bullpen arm for Wednesday's twin bill. Over two major-league appearances this year, he's allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out five in four innings.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sent down Sunday

Avila was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. Avila was called up by San Diego on April 13, but he made just two relief appearances during his time with the major-league club. The 25-year-old allowed two runs in four innings, and he should see more consistent work in El Paso following Sunday's demotion.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Joins big club

The Padres recalled Avila from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday. Avila gives San Diego an extra right-handed arm out of the bullpen after Austin Adams (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old Avila previously made one spot start apiece for the big club in 2019 and 2021 but has otherwise pitched in the minors over the past three seasons.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sent back to Triple-A

Avila was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. Avila wasn't going to pitch again this season after throwing four innings in his season debut Friday. He'll give his roster spot to James Norwood, who was recalled in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Takes loss in 2021 debut

Avila (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings to suffer the loss against San Francisco on Friday. Avila served up a one-out solo home run to Darin Ruf in the first inning and yielded a second run in the frame following a two-out error. However, he rebounded from the rough beginning to keep the Giants off the scoreboard over his remaining three frames. The right-hander needed an inefficient 84 pitches to get through his four innings, however, and he was tagged with the loss as San Diego's offense was unable to generate any run support. Avila had made only one career big-league appearance (in 2019) before Friday, and he didn't pitch at all in 2020 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Selected, starting Friday

The Padres selected Avila's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extrabase reports. He will start Friday's game against the Giants. The righty has posted a 3.22 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 22.1 innings at Triple-A this season. Having thrown five innings last Friday, Avila is well rested and, barring poor performance, should be able to provide some length in his first big-league appearance since 2019.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sent to minor-league camp

The Padres reassigned Avila (elbow) to minor-league camp Wednesday. Though he's believed to have recovered from his August 2019 Tommy John surgery, Avila didn't appear for the Padres in Cactus League play prior to his demotion. The 24-year-old made his big-league debut for San Diego in 2019 before going under the knife, tossing 5.1 innings of one-run ball in his lone spot start for the Padres. Assuming he's healthy again, Avila will likely begin the 2021 campaign at Double-A San Antonio or Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sent to minor-league camp

Avila (elbow) was reassigned to minor-league camp Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The move is purely procedural as Avila was invited to big-league camp despite undergoing Tommy John surgery in August. He is not expected to play during the 2020 season.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Re-joins Padres

Avila (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Tuesday. This move comes after Avila was non-tendered by the Padres earlier in the week. The righty made his big-league debut in 2019, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five across 5.1 innings. Avila is expected to miss most if not all of the 2020 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August.

  • Pedro Avila: Non-tendered by San Diego

Avila (elbow) was non-tendered by the Padres on Monday. Avila made his big-league debut in 2019, surrendering one run on four hits while fanning five over 5.1 innings. He's expected to miss most if not all of the 2020 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Headed for Tommy John surgery

Avila (elbow) is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery within the next few weeks, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. After wrapping up his rehab program for a strained right elbow in the rookie-level Arizona League, Avila slotted back into Double-A Amarillo's rotation last week and aggravated the injury in his first outing with the affiliate since April. The Padres' initial exams on Avila's elbow apparently detected structural damage, so he'll soon go under the knife to address the injury. Due to the timing of the procedure, the 22-year-old will likely remain on the shelf through the start of spring training in 2021.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Returns to injured list

Avila (elbow) was placed on Double-A Amarillo's 7-day injured list Sunday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. In his first rehab appearance with Amarillo on Thursday, Avila completed 1.1 innings before going to the ground and clutching his right elbow in pain after throwing a pitch. Avila has previously spent time on the IL this season with an elbow strain, though the Padres have yet to announce an update on his latest injury. The move to the injured list is retroactive to Aug. 16.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Rehabbing in rookie ball

Avila (elbow) covered 3.1 innings Sunday in his rehab outing with the Padres' rookie-level Arizona League affiliate. He gave up one run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Avila pushed his pitch count up to 33 while making his third rehab start for the affiliate. The right-hander, who has been on the 7-day injured list since April with a right elbow strain, should soon be ready to report back to Double-A Amarillo. Avila made his MLB debut prior to sustaining the injury, but the extensive time he missed likely hurts his chance of making it back to San Diego when rosters expand in September.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Out with elbow strain

Avila will be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks with a right elbow strain, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Avila made his second appearance with Double-A Amarillo on Friday -- after a nearly two-week layoff -- and gave up six runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. The 22-year-old seems likely to miss a good chunk of May as he'll need to rebuild his arm strength once cleared to resume throwing.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Optioned back to minors

Avila has been optioned back to Double-A Amarillo after making his big-league debut Thursday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Avila had a solid debut for the Padres, but he'll be sent back to Double-A, as he was called up for a spot start to give Chris Paddack an extra day to rest. Since he fared well in that start, holding the Diamondbacks to one earned run over 5.1 innings, the 22-year-old could get called up again down the line if the Padres want to continue to manage Paddack's workload.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Sharp in debut

Avila threw 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out five and walking two in a 7-6 victory for the Padres. It was a successful big-league debut for Avila, who limited Arizona to four hits and could have found himself in line for a win if not for a blown save from Brad Wieck. The 22-year-old was called up straight from Double-A Amarillo, so this was an impressive first go at the big-league level, but he could get optioned back to the minors shortly, as he was called up to give Chris Paddack an extra day of rest, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Tabbed for major-league debut

Avila will be called up from Double-A Amarillo to start Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Avila spent time in major-league camp this spring but his promotion comes as a bit of a surprise considering he spent all of 2018 at High-A Lake Elsinore. The 22-year-old allowed one run on two hits over six innings during his lone start with Amarillo this season. It could be a brief stay in the majors for Avila, as the Padres simply want to provide Chris Paddack with an additional day of rest, according to Lin.
