Ryan Bliss got his feet wet at the major-league level in 2024, putting up just a .687 OPS but cranking a couple home runs and stealing five bases over 71 plate appearances. The 25-year-old reached the 50-steal plateau in the minors for the second straight year, and Bliss also has surprising pop for a guy of his stature with 23 long balls in 153 contests at the Triple-A level. Although he played only second base with the Mariners, Bliss is also capable of handling shortstop, third base and left field. Whether he'll have a role with the big club on Opening Day is not yet clear, but Bliss has some fantasy potential if he gets an opportunity, particularly in the stolen base department.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Making case for starting role

Bliss could be in the "pole position" to win Seattle's starting job at second base, according to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. Bliss is making a serious case to begin the season atop the depth chart at second base, batting .300 with four extra-base hits, two RBI and two stolen bases over 20 at-bats (nine games) in Cactus League action. Kramer also notes the Mariners may be inclined to have Dylan Moore take on more of a super-utility role, which wouldn't restrict the veteran to one particular spot on the diamond. Moore has also gone just 1-for-22 during spring training, leaving the door open for Bliss to potentially win the primary gig at the keystone.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Returns to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Bliss to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday. The 24-year-old was called up by Seattle on Wednesday but will return to the minors due to Julio Rodriguez (ankle) being activated from the injured list. Bliss has played in 33 big-league games this season and has a .687 OPS and 31 percent strikeout rate in 71 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Hitting well in minors

Bliss owns a .308 average and .911 OPS with three doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, five walks, seven stolen bases and seven runs over the 59 plate appearances he's logged with Triple-A Tacoma since being optioned July 22. Bliss had his moments during his near-two-month-long big-league stint earlier this season, posting a .220 average and .648 OPS across 67 plate appearances over 31 games. The 24-year-old is still striking out a similarly elevated level with the Rainiers -- he sports a 30.5 percent strikeout rate during his current minor-league tenure and produced a 31.3 percent figure in Seattle -- but as his numbers indicate, Bliss is boasting an extremely well-rounded offensive profile while benefiting from the Pacific Coast League's hitter-friendly conditions. There remains a possibility Bliss gets a September promotion, especially considering his defensive versatility.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Moved back to Triple-A

The Mariners optioned Bliss to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. Bliss received his first MLB call-up May 27 and picked up 16 starts at second base in June, but playing time has been more difficult to come by in recent weeks. After Jorge Polanco returned from the injured list June 24 and took back everyday duties at the keystone, Bliss started just two of the Mariners' ensuing 21 games and went 0-for-10 with six strikeouts over that stretch. He'll get the opportunity to play on a more frequent basis with Tacoma.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Set to lose out with Polanco back

Bliss is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays. Bliss had started at the keystone in each of the Mariners' last four games, but his playing time will likely fall by the wayside with Seattle bringing back Jorge Polanco (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Monday. Polanco won't be eased back in as a designated hitter Monday and will take back his usual spot in the field at second base.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Tallies three hits again Saturday

Bliss went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and two RBI in a 9-0 victory versus Miami on Saturday. Bliss plated a run with a fourth-inning single and wrapped up the scoring in the contest with an RBI double in the eighth. It was the second consecutive three-hit game for the infielder after he went 3-for-3 with an RBI on Friday. Prior to the pair of three-hit contests, Bliss had needed 19 at-bats over nine games to collect his previous three base knocks. While he offers some intriguing upside on the basepaths -- Bliss swiped 28 bags in 50 games at Triple-A prior to his late-May call-up and has four thefts in five attempts over 20 contests in the majors -- it's not clear what role he might have with the Mariners when Jorge Polanco (hamstring) returns from the IL.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Records steal as pinch runner

Bliss entered Tuesday's win over the Athletics as a pinch runner in the top of the eighth inning and recorded a steal of second base. He did not log a subsequent plate appearance. The speedy rookie is already up to three swipes over his first six big-league games, with those numbers coming on the heels of a 28-for-34 showing in the steals department at Triple-A Tacoma. Bliss has seen only one ball drop in thus far over his 15 plate appearances, but he's maintained a presence on the basepaths and set himself up for stolen-base opportunities by also drawing four walks in that span.

  • Mariners' Ryan Bliss: Swipes two bases Saturday

Bliss went 1-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and three runs in a 9-0 win against the Angels on Saturday. Bliss made a big contribution from the No. 9 slot in the batting order, reaching base three times and scoring three of the Mariners' nine runs. The infielder probably wasn't in many fantasy lineups, but he made a big impact for managers who rolled with him by swiping a pair of bags. Speed is a big part of Bliss's game -- he swiped 28 bags in 50 games for Triple-A Tacoma this season after stealing 55 bases in 70 attempts in the minors last year.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryan Bliss: Earns org's monthly player award

Bliss earned the Diamondbacks' minor league Player of the Month award for April, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Bliss hit .410 (1.050 OPS) with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 14 RBI and eight stolen bases over 18 games at Double-A Amarillo. The shortstop hasn't stopped hitting in May, collecting two homers and five RBI with a .919 OPS through five games. It's a huge turnaround for the organization's second-round pick in the 2021 draft, who hit .214 with a .641 OPS last year for High-A Hillsboro. Bliss opted to grind through the season instead of working on his swing at the team's training facility and performed better, hitting .262 (.818 OPS) over July and August.
