Owen passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment Tuesday, which is hardly a surprise given that he's a 27-year-old with just five MLB plate appearances under his belt. He'll remain as organizational depth for the Pirates for now.

The 27-year-old will receive his first taste of big-league action with Gregory Polanco (undisclosed) landing on the injured list. Owen was promoted to Triple-A in 2019 but struggled at the highest level of the minors, posting a .622 OPS across 42 games.
