Jhon Torres: Released by Cardinals
Torres was given his unconditional release Tuesday.
Once an intriguing prospect who headlined the Cardinals' return from Cleveland in the 2018 Oscar Mercado trade, Torres never had sustained success above rookie ball. His value peaked around the time of the trade -- he slashed .321/.409/.525 with eight home runs in 44 games across multiple rookie levels as an 18-year-old in 2018.

Cardinals' Jhon Torres: Returns from IL
Torres (undisclosed) was reinstated from the 7-day injured list Monday and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in his return to the lineup Tuesday in Single-A Palm Beach's 5-1 win over Jupiter.
Torres made his season debut Tuesday after spending approximately seven weeks on the shelf with the unspecified injury. The 22-year-old spent the entire 2021 campaign with High-A Peoria, so he could be in line for a promotion once he gets a few games under his belt with Palm Beach, where he was presumably assigned because of its proximity to the Cardinals' spring training facility.

Cardinals' Jhon Torres: Lands on 7-day IL
Torres was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list for an undisclosed reason Friday.
Torres appeared in 97 games at High-A Peoria last year and hit .235 with six homers, 47 runs and 32 RBI. It's not yet clear when he'll be back in action.

Cardinals' Jhon Torres: Struggling at Peoria
Torres, RotoWire's No. 2 fantasy prospect in the Cardinals organization, is hitting .051 (2-for-39) with two RBI, six walks and two runs across his first 46 plate appearances at Low-A Peoria.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a stellar 2018 season at two different Rookie league stops, slashing a combined .321/.409/.525 over 44 games. His introduction to the next level has been a rough one thus far, with a bloated 41.3 percent strikeout rate the most glaring issue. However, Torres' prior body of work certainly implies he has the talent to overcome his initial struggles.

Cardinals' Jhon Torres: Awaits short-season assignment
Torres will open the year in extended spring training before being assigned to a short-season affiliate in June, Mike Rosenbaum of MLB.com reports.
The imposing 6-foot-4 right fielder made a name for himself in the AZL last year with the Indians and was even better in the GCL after getting traded to St. Louis as part of the package that sent Oscar Mercado to Cleveland. Torres should head to either the Appalachian League or the New York-Penn League when short-season leagues open in mid-June.
