Player Outlook
With Andres Gimenez dealt to Toronto and 2024 No. 1 overall pick Travis Bazzana not ready to assume the big-league second base job, this season is shaping up to be Juan Brito's chance to show what he can do against big-league pitching. He doesn't have any plus tools, and currently doesn't even project to have any above-average tools, but Brito could hit around .250 or .260 with 20-homer power and a handful of steals. He slashed .256/.365/.443 with 21 home runs, 13 steals and a 16.1 percent strikeout rate in 144 games at Triple-A during his age-22 season. Unlike many Guardians middle infielders before him, Brito is just OK in the field and lacks impact speed, so he'll need to get on base at a strong clip while getting to all of his 50-grade power in games in order to profile as an everyday second baseman. The switch hitter could see time at third base or first base as needed, but he fits best at the keystone, which is Bazzana's spot in Cleveland long term. Brito will need to show something offensively as a rookie in order to figure into the club's long-term plans.

  • Guardians' Juan Brito: Optioned to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Brito to Triple-A Columbus on Friday. The 23-year-old posted a .177/.222/.529 slash line with four homers over 13 games in spring training and was unable to earn a place on the Opening Day roster. Brito still has a strong chance to make his MLB debut at some point in 2025, especially if he can replicate or improve upon the .808 OPS he produced at Triple-A last year.

  • Guardians' Juan Brito: Homers again

Brito started at second base and went 2-for-4 with with a solo home run in Tuesday's spring game against the Rangers. Four of Brito's six Cactus League hits have left the park, giving him a lopsided spring line of .176/.222/.529 through 13 games. He's one of a host of players competing for the open job at second base. Brito's defense and speed are mediocre, which means his power will need to carry him past those shortcomings.

  • Guardians' Juan Brito: In running for second base job

The Guardians "continue to express their extreme excitement" at getting a look at Brito at second base this spring, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Joe Noga of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported in January that Brito might be a long shot to win the second base job. However, Bell has listed Brito as the starter at the keystone in her first Opening Day roster projection, though she acknowledges the competition will be "back and forth between Brito and Gabriel Arias all spring." The 23-year-old Brito slashed .256/.365/.443 with 21 homers and 13 steals in 2024 at Triple-A Columbus and offers the most offensive upside out out Cleveland's second-base candidates. Tyler Freeman, Daniel Schneemann and Angel Martinez are also in the mix to replace Andres Gimenez, who was traded to the Blue Jays.

Brito was promoted to Triple-A Columbus on Monday. Brito -- one of Cleveland's top prospects -- posted an .817 OPS at the Double-A level this season, and he will get a chance to show what he can do at the top level of the minors before the campaign comes to a close.

  • Guardians' Juan Brito: Bumped up to Double-A

Brito was promoted from High-A Lake County to Double-A Akron on Friday. Brito had a solid 35-game stint at High-A, slashing .265/.379/.424 with four home runs, three stolen bases, 14 RBI and 29 runs scored over 161 plate appearances. The Guardians decided it was time for him to take the next step, and it's likely he'll spend much of the rest of 2023 with Akron.
