The Padres optioned Jacob to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. Jacob spent most of last season at Double-A San Antonio but appeared in three games for the Padres in July, throwing three scoreless innings while striking out five and walking one. The 25-year-old had a relatively successful spring as well, and he could receive a midseason promotion to San Diego's bullpen if he stays hot in Triple-A.... See More ... See Less

Padres' Alek Jacob: Good to go for spring
Padres manager Mike Shildt said Sunday that Jacob (elbow) has no lingering health concerns as spring training gets underway, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Jacob has reported to the Padres' camp and looks as though he'll face no restrictions after he ended the 2023 season on the 60-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right elbow. Before being shut down shortly after the All-Star break, Jacob made the first three appearances of his MLB career out of the San Diego bullpen, allowing no runs or hits over three innings while striking out five and walking one. The 25-year-old righty will be given a fair chance to compete for an Opening Day roster spot, though the fact that he has three minor-league options remaining and doesn't have a long track record at the big-league level may work against him.... Padres' Alek Jacob: Out with elbow inflammation
Jacob was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation Saturday. The move was backdated to Friday, so Jacob could return as soon as Aug. 12 if his inflammation has subsided by then. In three appearances during his brief time with the team, Jacob struck out five of the 10 batters he faced while not allowing a run or a hit. Jacob's roster spot will go to Jackson Wolf, whose contract was selected ahead of his big-league debut.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Alek Jacob: Arrives in majors
The Padres selected Jacob's contract from Double-A San Antonio on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Jacob fell to the 16th round of the 2021 MLB Draft following a four-year NCAA career at Gonzaga, but he's done nothing but dominate minor-league hitters to the tune of a 1.82 ERA and 138:25 K:BB in 104 professional innings. The 25-year-old right-hander could prove to be a weapon in relief for the Padres as he completes his swift ascent to the big leagues.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Alek Jacob: Debuts at Double-A
Jacob (shoulder) was assigned to Double-A San Antonio on April 19 and has since made two relief appearances for the affiliate, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over two innings. Jacob's season debut was slightly delayed while he worked his way back from a right shoulder injury. The 24-year-old right-hander is one of the better relief prospects in the San Diego system and is coming off a 2022 campaign in which he submitted a 2.68 ERA while striking out 77 over 57 innings across stops with three affiliates.... Padres' Alek Jacob: Out with shoulder injury
Jacob is out with a right shoulder injury, Sam Dykstra of MLB.com reports. A 24-year-old righty reliever, Jacob had a 2.68 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 77 strikeouts in 57 innings across stops in the three highest levels of the minors last year. If he is able to get healthy, he would probably be assigned to Double-A or Triple-A.... See More ... See Less

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell14H agoSeven scoreless frames from Michael King, who was getting so much movement on his changeup and sinker tonight. He struck out 11. Among Padres starters in the past 20 years, only Blake Snell and Jake Peavy have struck out more Dodgers in a game.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell14H agoFacing perhaps the sport's toughest lineup, Michael King has a season-high 11 strikeouts through six innings. He's surrendered only two hits, both softly hit singles to the opposite field. The Padres still lead, 1-0.

AJ Cassavell@AJCassavell15H agoWhole buncha swings and misses so far tonight, between King and Glasnow. But Luis Campusano sure didn't miss Glasnow's belt-high, first-pitch fastball. He sent it 429 feet to the home bullpen in left-center. It's 1-0 Padres.
