Roman Anthony received a $2.5 million bonus, roughly three times the slot value, after the Red Sox selected him out of high school with the No. 79 overall pick in the 2022 draft. He came into 2023 with some deep sleeper buzz and shattered all expectations during a three-level climb from Single-A to Double-A. Anthony doesn't turn 20 until May, so the fact he has already excelled at High-A (164 wRC+) and during a brief run at Double-A (185 wRC+) is a promising indicator. The 6-foot-2 outfielder's 37.1 Hard% would be an elite mark for any minor-league hitter, yet Anthony posted it while being 2-to-5 years younger than most of the pitchers he faced. His strikeout rate spiked at High-A (30.6%) while it was below 20 percent at every other stop, but his batted-ball profile (45.3 GB%, 38.8 Pull%, 3.1 IFFB%) and power production was best at High-A. He eased hit tool concerns by hitting .333 with a 23.6 K% and 13.0 BB% over the final month. Once an above-average runner, Anthony has slowed down as he's filled out, and he only stole five bases on six attempts in 64 games at High-A and Double-A, despite getting on base 42 percent of the time. The lefty hitter was significantly better against righties (.892 OPS, 23.2 K%) than against lefties (.753 OPS, 29.3 K%), but that's just a small thing to monitor in the coming years. With a strong season, Anthony could get the call in late August while preserving his rookie eligibility for 2025.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Shows off power in skills contest

    Anthony won the Futures Skills Showcase in Arlington (Tex.) on Saturday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. The inaugural skills showcase was a three-round competition designed to highlight bat control and power. Anthony was last after two rounds -- the first a bunting competition followed by hitting to specific thirds of the outfield. It was during the final round, the home run part of the showcase, when Anthony showed off. He homered on six of his eight swings, including four going the opposite way (which meant more points). Anthony is slashing .241/.349/.441 with 15 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 27 RBI, eight steals and 38 runs over 66 games for Double-A Portland.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Returns from elbow issue

    Anthony went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run Sunday in Double-A Portland's 10-5 win over Reading. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Anthony was back in the lineup Sunday after missing Portland's previous three games while recovering from an elbow injury that stemmed from being hit by a pitch Wednesday. The 20-year-old outfielder had returned from a rib injury earlier this month and is now slashing a robust .414/.485/.931 through his first eight games of June.

    Anthony went 3-for-7 with a walk, a double, two home runs and two additional runs scored across both ends of Saturday's doubleheader for Double-A Portland. The 19-year-old prospect was introduced to Double-A late last season, slashing .343/.477/.543 over 44 plate appearances, and made efforts during the offseason to improve himself. Anthony worked on his body, adding 20 pounds to make a bigger impact this season, per Ben Weinrib of MLB.com. "Now that I've had that experience and had an offseason to work and put some size on and get stronger, I feel like at whatever level I'm at ... just that feeling of knowing that I belong and can hang with this type of competition," Anthony said.     Anthony has been promoted by the Red Sox from High-A Greenville to Double-A Portland, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Anthony has been one of the biggest risers among prospects this season and has now reached the Double-A level in his first full season at just 19 years of age. The left-handed hitting outfielder has collected a .265/.396/.459 batting line with 13 home runs, 13 stolen bases and a 113:78 K:BB over 96 games between Low-A Salem and Greenville in 2023.
