Spencer Arrighetti's rookie season had a little bit of everything for everyone, including his fans and his detractors. He had four different contests in which he struck out 10 or more batters, capped off by a 13 strikeout performance against Boston. Four other times, he allowed five or more earned runs, including seven in just 1.1 innings against Detroit. He twice allowed three homers in a contest, and yet struck out 27.1 percent of the batters he faced. However, it was that inconsistency that led to him winning just seven of his 28 starts for a team that won its division. The rookie lived and died off his curveball and sweeper, which collectively held opposing hitters to a .151 batting average, while the league hit .296 off the rest of his offerings. Arrighetti showed signs of progress in the second half, as three of the four aforementioned big strikeout games came after the break, and a reduction in his walk rate helped reduce his ERA two and a half runs from the first half. As long as his nonbreaking pitches are this hittable, homers will continue to be an issue for him in Houston, but reducing the walks can help offset some of that damage. That 21.4 percent K-BB percentage in the second half of the season is something to admire since his overall numbers somewhat mask that late-season goodness.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Working on two-seam fastball

Arrighetti is working on a new two-seam fastball against right-handed hitters this spring, because his four-seam fastball last year was hit hard, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. He only threw the new pitch three times in his last start against the Cardinals, because they had six left-handed batters. The four-seam fastball got hit to the tune of a .302 batting average and .516 slugging percentage last year, hence the need for a new offering. "[I want to] throw something hard that doesn't get barrelled," he said. "Simply put." The new pitch is still a work in progress for Arrighetti, who already gets good results on his offspeed offerings.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Mixed results in spring starts

Arrighetti recorded two shutout innings while striking out three and not allowing a baserunner in Saturday's Grapefruit League game. Arrighetti was shaky in his opening spring outing, handing out three free passes in two innings of work. Saturday's appearance showed improvement, as he threw 17 of his 29 pitches for strikes. Arrighetti will have high expectations in 2025 after maintaining a 3.18 ERA across his final 65 innings to close last campaign.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Takes low-scoring loss

Arrighetti (7-13) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings, taking the loss versus the Padres on Monday. Arrighetti allowed an RBI double to Manny Machado in the first inning and a solo home run to Jackson Merrill in the fourth. This was Arrighetti's third straight outing without a win, though he's limited opponents to two runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. The rookie right-hander is now at a 4.68 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 161:62 K:BB through 136.2 innings over 27 starts. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Angels.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Bounces back with no-decision

Arrighetti allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Tuesday. Arrighetti gave up a run in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run to Zack Gelof, but he was able to settle in after that. This was a good bounce-back performance for Arrighetti after he failed to complete one inning in Cincinnati in his previous start. The rookie right-hander is now at a 4.72 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 158:61 K:BB through 131.2 innings over 26 starts this season, though he's allowed three or more runs just four times in his last nine starts. Arrighetti is projected to make his next start at San Diego with the Astros expected to use a six-man rotation this week.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Rough night vs. Reds

Arrighetti (7-12) took the loss Wednesday against Cincinnati, allowing nine runs on six hits and three walks over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one. After pitching to a 1.95 ERA with 47 strikeouts across five starts (32.1 innings) in August, Arrighetti got off to a brutal start in September, allowing a season-high nine runs while failing to make it out of the first inning. The rookie right-hander's ERA shot up to 5.26 with a 1.44 WHIP and 151:60 K:BB through 125 innings this season. Arrighetti will look to put Wednesday's effort behind him in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week at home against the A's.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Bounces back with dominant win

Arrighetti (6-11) notched the victory against Baltimore on Thursday, allowing three hits and issuing one walk while striking out six batters over six scoreless innings. Arrighetti began August with two excellent outings before stumbling with a 5.2-inning, four-run loss to the White Sox last Friday. The rookie bounced back with one of his best starts of the season Thursday, as he allowed just four total baserunners and retired the final eight batters he faced. Arrighetti also collected his fourth quality start over his past five outings, a span during which he has a 2.93 ERA and 44:8 K:BB across 30.2 frames.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Stumbles against White Sox

Arrighetti (5-11) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Friday, striking out five and taking a loss against the White Sox. Most of the damage against Arrighetti came off the bat of Luis Robert, who went deep twice. Arrighetti is now 1-4 over his last five starts despite a respectable 4.11 ERA and an impressive 41:8 K:BB during that stretch. He now owns a 5.20 ERA with a 134:52 K:BB through 110.2 innings this season. Arrighetti has thrown at least six innings in five of his last six outings. His next start is projected to be in Baltimore.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Strikes out career-high 13 in win

Arrighetti (5-10) earned the win against the Red Sox on Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk with 13 strikeouts over seven innings. After striking out 12 batters Sunday, Arrighetti set a new career high Saturday while generating 21 swinging strikes on 92 pitches. The rookie's 5.14 ERA and 1.45 WHIP are still unsightly, but he has logged four quality starts in his past five outings with a 43:9 K:BB across 31 innings. He'll try to keep the good times rolling in a favorable matchup against the White Sox next week.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Strikes out eight in loss

Arrighetti (4-9) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Dodgers. Arrighetti produced a baseline quality start, but he faded late by giving up a solo shot to James Outman in the fifth inning and a two-run blast to Gavin Lux in the sixth. This was the first time in four starts Arrighetti was tagged for multiple home runs. On the bright side, he's gone at least six innings in four of his last six starts, and he's limited opponents to three runs or less in three of those games. The rookie right-hander is at a 5.58 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 104:47 K:BB through 92 innings over 19 starts this season. He's tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Rays.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Delivers quality start Saturday

Arrighetti came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 extra-inning loss to the Rangers, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out seven. The rookie right-hander needed 85 pitches (53 strikes) to produce his third quality start of the season as he got locked in a pitchers' duel with Nathan Eovaldi. Arrighetti has had his moments, but he's been very erratic this season, and since the beginning of June he has only one win in eight outings with a 5.20 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 42:21 K:BB through 36.1 innings. Those numbers are good enough to keep him in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break, but Arrighetti could eventually lose his spot if Houston adds significant reinforcements to its staff, either from the injured list or at the trade deadline.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Steady in no-decision

Arrighetti allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Sunday. While Arrighetti put too much traffic on the basepaths, he was able to limit the damage. Christian Vazquez drove in both runs on Arrighetti's line with an RBI single in the second and a fielder's choice in the fourth. Arrighetti has had a couple of stumbles lately, completing five innings in just three of his last six starts. He's now at a 5.96 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 86:41 K:BB through 74 innings over 16 starts for the year. The rookie right-hander is projected to make his next start at home versus the Rangers.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Hit hard in loss

Arrighetti (4-7) took the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks across four innings against Toronto. He struck out five. Five of the six hits Arrighetti allowed went for extra bases, including a three-run home run by George Springer and a solo homer by Spencer Horwitz, both of which came in the third inning. Tuesday's outing came on the back of the rookie's best start of 2024 when he blanked the Rockies across seven innings. Arrighetti has surrendered six or more runs three times this season and has walked multiple batters in all but one of his appearances, owning a 6.13 ERA overall. He's on track to close out a two-start week Sunday in Minnesota.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Fans career-high 10 in win

Arrighetti (4-6) picked up the win Wednesday, scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings in a 7-1 victory over the Rockies. He struck out 10 without walking a batter. The rookie right-hander put together the best effort of his brief career, setting a new career high in Ks while generating an eye-popping 35 called or swinging strikes among his 89 pitches. The quality start was only Arrighetti's second in 14 trips to the mound this season, but he has given up three runs or less in six of his last seven outings, posting a 4.18 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 39:18 K:BB through 32.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look to build on this performance in his next start, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Toronto.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Falls apart in fifth frame

Arrighetti allowed three runs on five hits and and four walks while striking out two batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Thursday. Arrighetti navigated through four scoreless innings despite allowing at least one baserunner in each of those frames. The rookie's tightrope act came to an end in the fifth, however, as the White Sox put four runners on base (on three hits and a walk) before he could get his second out. Arrighetti has now completed fewer than five frames in three of his past four starts, and walks have been a major issue for him during that span, as he's issued 12 free passes over 14.1 innings.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Pummeled early in loss

Arrighetti (3-6) allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 1.1 innings to take the loss versus the Tigers on Saturday. Arrighetti was moved up a day when Justin Verlander (neck) was scratched from his scheduled start. The result was disastrous for the Astros, as Arrighetti gave up three home runs in his shortest outing of the season, though the Astros came into Saturday with a well-rested bullpen. The rookie right-hander has not made a good impression in the majors this year with a 6.37 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 63:31 K:BB over 53.2 innings through 12 starts. With the Astros' rotation already thin, it's likely Arrighetti sticks around for his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to be a tough home matchup versus the Orioles.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Pitches well in no-decision

Arrighetti allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against San Francisco on Monday. Arrighetti held the Giants scoreless through five frames and retired the first two batters he faced in the sixth before a walk and a run-scoring triple ended his outing. He fell just short of a quality start but nonetheless impressed in a battle with Giants rookie Kyle Harrison. Arrighetti did struggle a bit with his control again -- he's walked exactly three batters in each of his past four contests and is fifth-worst among qualified starters with a 12.1 percent walk rate on the campaign. The right-hander has put up respectable overall numbers of late, though, posting a 3.19 ERA and 36:16 K:BB over 31 innings across his past six starts.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Cleared to start Monday

Arrighetti (calf) is listed as the Astros' probable starter for Monday's game against the Giants in San Francisco. After he took a line drive off his left calf and was lifted after three innings in his most recent start against the Cardinals this past Tuesday, Arrighetti's availability for this week had been in some doubt. Fortunately for the rookie right-hander, he was dealing with nothing more than a bruise to his calf and made solid progress in his recovery in the days after he suffered the injury. He's not expected to face any major restrictions with his pitch count Monday for the front end of what's expected to be a two-start week, with his second turn through the rotation set to come next Sunday versus the Tigers.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Battling bruised calf

Arrighetti was removed early in his start in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Cardinals due to a left calf contusion, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. He struck out four and was charged with one earned run on three hits and three walks before departing. Arrighetti took a 103.8-mile-per-hour comebacker off his leg during the second inning of the game and was only able to get through the third frame before being lifted. The 24-year-old righty doesn't appear to have suffered any serious damage, but the Astros will surely keep an eye on his calf as he gets closer to his next start. He tentatively lines up to take the hill Monday San Francisco.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Posts best outing of career

Arrighetti (3-5) earned the win over Seattle on Thursday, pitching six scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. Arrighetti not only recorded the first quality start of his career, he also fanned a career-high eight batters and didn't allow any extra-base hits. The rookie right-hander did walk three batters -- he's issued multiple free passes in each of his nine starts on the campaign -- but none of those came back to hurt him. Arrighetti has been making a case to stick in the Astros' rotation following a slow start to the campaign. He held an 8.44 ERA after a poor outing May 8 but has since won three of his past four starts with a 3.63 ERA over that stretch.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Picks up first big-league victory

Arrighetti (1-4) earned the win over Oakland on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings. Arrighetti opened with three scoreless frames before giving up a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Houston was ahead by just one run when the right-hander departed, but a strong performance by the team's bullpen and a late offensive surge ensured that the rookie held onto his first win as a major-leaguer. Arrighetti has managed to stick in the rotation despite posting a 7.52 ERA through six starts, so Monday's victory was a much-needed positive outing in terms of his chances of hanging on as a starter. Still, with Cristian Javier recently coming off the injured list and Jose Urquidy (forearm) potentially soon to follow, Arrighetti may not be long for the big-league rotation.
