Spencer Arrighetti's rookie season had a little bit of everything for everyone, including his fans and his detractors. He had four different contests in which he struck out 10 or more batters, capped off by a 13 strikeout performance against Boston. Four other times, he allowed five or more earned runs, including seven in just 1.1 innings against Detroit. He twice allowed three homers in a contest, and yet struck out 27.1 percent of the batters he faced. However, it was that inconsistency that led to him winning just seven of his 28 starts for a team that won its division. The rookie lived and died off his curveball and sweeper, which collectively held opposing hitters to a .151 batting average, while the league hit .296 off the rest of his offerings. Arrighetti showed signs of progress in the second half, as three of the four aforementioned big strikeout games came after the break, and a reduction in his walk rate helped reduce his ERA two and a half runs from the first half. As long as his nonbreaking pitches are this hittable, homers will continue to be an issue for him in Houston, but reducing the walks can help offset some of that damage. That 21.4 percent K-BB percentage in the second half of the season is something to admire since his overall numbers somewhat mask that late-season goodness.

  • Astros' Spencer Arrighetti: Working on two-seam fastball

    Arrighetti is working on a new two-seam fastball against right-handed hitters this spring, because his four-seam fastball last year was hit hard, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. He only threw the new pitch three times in his last start against the Cardinals, because they had six left-handed batters. The four-seam fastball got hit to the tune of a .302 batting average and .516 slugging percentage last year, hence the need for a new offering. "[I want to] throw something hard that doesn't get barrelled," he said. "Simply put." The new pitch is still a work in progress for Arrighetti, who already gets good results on his offspeed offerings.

Arrighetti was shaky in his opening spring outing, handing out three free passes in two innings of work. Saturday's appearance showed improvement, as he threw 17 of his 29 pitches for strikes. After pitching to a 1.95 ERA with 47 strikeouts across five starts (32.1 innings) in August, Arrighetti got off to a brutal start in September, allowing a season-high nine runs while failing to make it out of the first inning. Most of the damage against Arrighetti came off the bat of Luis Robert, who went deep twice. The rookie right-hander needed 85 pitches (53 strikes) to produce his third quality start of the season as he got locked in a pitchers' duel with Nathan Eovaldi. Arrighetti has had his moments, but he's been very erratic this season, and since the beginning of June he has only one win in eight outings with a 5.20 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 42:21 K:BB through 36.1 innings. Those numbers are good enough to keep him in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break, but Arrighetti could eventually lose his spot if Houston adds significant reinforcements to its staff, either from the injured list or at the trade deadline.

Tuesday's outing came on the back of the rookie's best start of 2024 when he blanked the Rockies across seven innings.
