A third-round pick in 2022, Trey Lipscomb climbed up to Double-A Harrisburg last year and slashed .284/.310/.438 with 10 homers and an 18.2 percent strikeout rate over 80 games. The 23-year-old won a minor-league Gold Glove at third base in 2023, but he's played second base and shortstop as well. The organization doesn't view him as a future utility player and wants him to play every day, but given that the Nationals have question marks at both second base and third base in Luis Garcia and Nick Senzel, it's not out of the question Lipscomb displaces one of them in the starting lineup to begin the season.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Three runs in comeback win

Lipscomb went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Marlins. Getting the start at third base and batting sixth, Lipscomb played a big role as the Nationals made a stunning comeback from an early 7-0 deficit, eventually winning 12-9. The rookie has been getting consistent playing time since returning to the majors April 24, and he's responded with three straight multi-hit performances to boost his slash line on the season to .292/.356/.354 with one homer, five steals, four RBI and 13 runs in 73 plate appearances. Lipscomb has started all three of those games at third base, while Nick Senzel handles DH duties and Jesse Winker moves to left field. Expect the Nats to continue finding room for Lipscomb in the lineup as long as he's swinging a hot bat.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Sitting Thursday

Lipscomb isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Lipscomb will take a seat after going 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored during Wednesday's 11-2 loss. Joey Meneses will start at first base in his absence, while Jesse Winker serves as Washington's designated hitter.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Will see playing time at first base

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Lipscomb will play a good amount of first base as Joey Gallo shifts to right field, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Gallo has been the team's regular first baseman, but he will receive reps in right field now with Lane Thomas (knee) sidelined indefinitely. Lipscomb will play multiple positions, per Martinez, but he is starting at first base Wednesday in Atlanta and could receive the lion's share of starts there for the time being. The 23-year-old posted a .563 OPS with one home run and four stolen bases over 14 games with the Nationals earlier this month.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Officially recalled

The Nationals recalled Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday. Lipscomb is taking the roster spot vacated by outfielder Lane Thomas (knee), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. The rookie posted a .563 OPS with one home run and four stolen bases over 14 games with the Nationals earlier this month and could get some reps at third base if the club wants to use Senzel in the outfield as a fill-in for Thomas.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Joins team in Washington

Lipscomb has joined the Nationals' taxi squad and could be called up from Triple-A Rochester prior to Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Outfielder Lane Thomas is getting an MRI on his left knee after exiting Tuesday's 4-1 loss to the Dodgers, and the expectation is that he'll require a trip to the injured list. Lipscomb put up a .563 OPS with one home run and four stolen bases over 14 games with the Nationals earlier this month. He could see action at third base if the club elects to use Nick Senzel in the outfield or in the designated hitter spot in place of Thomas.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Optioned to Triple-A

Lipscomb was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Monday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Lipscomb got regular at-bats at third base while Nick Senzel was on the injured list, but with Senzel back in action Lipscomb will head back to Rochester to play every day. The 23-year-old has slashed .224/.278/.286 with one home run and four stolen bases over 14 games with the big club.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Collects three steals in victory

Lipscomb went 3-for-5 with a run, an RBI and three stolen bases Monday in an 8-1 win over San Francisco. Lipscomb was a key part of a big second inning for Washington, singling to left field to plate the team's first run and proceeding to steal second base. He reached third on a Luis Garcia infield single, then provided a big highlight when he stole home while San Francisco attempted to catch Garcia in a rundown. Lipscomb went on to collect two more hits and another theft in the contest, highlighting why he's remained in the lineup despite a recent 0-for-11 slump. The 23-year-old is slashing .265/.286/.353 with a homer, three RBI, five runs and four steals through 35 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Cracks first big-league homer

Lipscomb went 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a second run scored in Sunday's loss to the Reds. In his second MLB game, the 23-year-old infielder drove a 91.6 mph fastball from Buck Farmer the other way over the right-field fence in the seventh inning for his first career homer. Lipscomb has carried his blistering spring into the regular season, going 3-for-7 with a homer and a steal to kick off his career, and he had a golden opportunity in front of him to lock down the starting job at third base while Nick Senzel (thumb) is sidelined.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Officially selected to MLB roster

The Nationals selected Lipscomb's contract from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Lipscomb will officially get his first look in the majors after Nick Senzel (thumb) landed on the injured list Saturday. The 23-year-old prospect was only able to reach Double-A last season, but a .400/.455/.540 slash line during spring training makes it reasonable to think he can find early success in the majors. Lipscomb is capable of playing across the infield but will likely play most often at third base as Senzel's replacement.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Promotion imminent

The Nationals plan to call up Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester ahead of Saturday's game against the Reds, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Lipscomb had an impressive showing in spring training, posting a .400/.455/.540 line while striking out seven times across 55 plate appearances. He was reassigned to minor-league camp earlier this week, though the injury to Nick Senzel (hand) will open up a roster spot. Lipscomb is capable of playing any infield position and appeared primarily at second base in the exhibition season. However, his clearest path to regular at-bats immediately looks to be at third base.

  • Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Making push for roster spot

Lipscomb has been the most surprising prospect in camp for the Nationals and has a real chance of winning a spot on the Opening Day roster, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. A third-round pick in 2022, Lipscomb climbed up to Double-A Harrisburg last year and slashed .284/.310/.438 with 10 homers and an 18.2 percent strikeout rate over 80 games. The 23-year-old won a minor-league Gold Glove at third base in 2023, but he's played second base and shortstop as well in camp while batting .372 (16-for-43) with a 5:7 BB:K. He's peaking at the right time too, slugging his first homer of the spring Wednesday off Steven Matz while going 3-for-4 with four RBI against the Cardinals. The organization doesn't view him as a future utility player and wants him to play every day, but given that the Nationals have question marks at both second base and third base in Luis Garcia and Nick Senzel, it's not out of the question Lipscomb displaces one of them in the starting lineup to begin the season.
