Smith had been on the shelf at Toledo since the All-Star break due to a right shoulder strain before rejoining the Triple-A bullpen upon completing a six-appearance rehab assignment between the Florida State and Midwest Leagues. The 25-year-old righty possesses a spot on the Tigers' 40-man roster and could be a candidate for a promotion in the final two weeks of the season if Detroit has a need for another bullpen arm.

The Tigers optioned Smith to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday after their 11-2 win over the Nationals in the first game of a doubleheader.
Smith was credited with his first MLB after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief while allowing two hits and two walks without recording a strikeout. The right-hander has allowed just two earned runs over 13 major-league innings since the beginning of June, but because he's unlikely to be available for at least the next couple of days following the 43-pitch appearance, he was sent back to the minors. The Tigers recalled outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy from Triple-A to replace Smith on the 26-man active roster.

The transaction clears a spot on the Tigers' 26-man active roster for Sawyer Gipson-Long (elbow/hip), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Wednesday against the White Sox. Smith was promoted to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Emily Waldon of Baseball America reports.
Smith has performed well through his first 12 appearances of the 2025 campaign at Double-A Erie, posting a 1.80 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 27 strikeouts over 20.0 innings. He's found success strictly in a relief role this season after making 13 starts a season ago at High-A West Michigan.
