Player Outlook
Ryan Weiss is part of a large group of pitchers returning from overseas this winter, though unlike the rest of them, he's yet to make his big-league debut. He signed with the CPBL's Fubon Guardians two years ago as a 27-year-old after struggling to a 6.72 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across parts of three seasons at the Triple-A level, then moved on to the KBO's Hanwha Eagles five starts later. Weiss took big steps forward in his two seasons in Korea, particularly this past year, where he helped his team reach the Korean Series by posting a 2.87 ERA and 1.02 WHIP across 30 starts, pairing a 28.6 K% with a 7.7 BB%. It was enough to convince the Astros to sign him to a one-year, $2.6 million deal, though that's not a contract which implies the team is committed to giving him a rotation role. He appears lined up to compete for a back-end starter job this spring, but he may fit best in the bullpen, where his fastball and slider could cause problems for righties if his stuff ticks up in shorter stints.

    Weiss delivered two hitless innings in relief in Monday's win over the Red Sox, striking out three while walking one. Weiss failed to crack Houston's rotation out of spring training, though he did make the team as a bullpen option. The right-hander looked sharp Monday, as he set down six straight Red Sox after issuing a leadoff walk in the eighth. It was an encouraging performance for Weiss, after he gave up a home run to Zach Neto in his major league debut Friday. While Weiss could work his way into the high-leverage picture, he's more likely to serve as a swingman or long-relief option this year.

It was a solid spring debut overall for Weiss, as he was able to work out of trouble to keep the Mets off the board.     The Astros signed Weiss to a one-year contract Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Weiss is getting a major-league contract after spending part of 2023 in independent ball and the last two seasons with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization. The right-hander had an excellent 2025 campaign with the Eagles, posting a 2.87 ERA and 207:56 K:BB over 178.2 innings covering 30 starts. Weiss -- who turns 29 next week -- will be used as a starting pitcher by the Astros. He has not appeared in a major-league game.
