McGowin was recalled from the alternate training site Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

The 28-year-old has been at the alternate site all season and will receive his first major-league chance of 2020 with Javy Guerra (hamstring) heading to the injured list. McGowin appeared in seven games for the Nationals last season and has a 10.13 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 16 innings.

McGowin was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

McGowin had a strong showing while working in major-league camp as he posted a 0.00 ERA and six strikeouts over 2.1 innings, but he'll work in the minors to begin the season. The 28-year-old has struggled in brief action in the majors over the past two seasons, but he could make another appearance in the majors this year if he continues to impress at the minor-league level.

McGowin has posted a 0.00 ERA and 6:0 K:BB through 2.1 spring innings.

The 28-year-old isn't in the Nats' plans for the 26-man roster, but it's hard to completely dismiss a pitcher who's gotten six of his seven outs via strikeout. McGowin has yet to impress in brief big-league stints the last two seasons, but his performance in 11 starts for Triple-A Fresno (3.86 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 68:17 K:BB through 60.2 innings) suggests he could provide adequate reinforcement if the team has to dig deep into its rotation depth over the summer.

McGowin was recalled from Double-A Harrisburg prior to Sunday's game against the Brewers, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.

Sean Doolittle (knee tendinitis) was placed on the 10-day injured list after Saturday's 14-inning defeat, so the Nationals summoned a fresh arm in McGowin. He last pitched Aug. 14, so he should be capable of going several innings out of the bullpen Sunday if necessary.

McGowin was optioned to Double-A Harrisburg on Friday, Byron Kerr of MASN Sports reports.

McGowin's latest stay with the big-league team lasted 10 days. He made a pair of appearances, giving up three runs in three innings. His 16:3 K:BB in 13 major-league innings on the season remains quite strong, but it's come with a 9.69 ERA. Michael Blazek's contract was purchased in a corresponding move.

McGowin was recalled from Double-A Harrisburg on Friday.

McGowin has allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in 10 innings of work for the Nationals this season, but his 11:2 K:BB does at least provide some room for optimism. Jonny Venters (shoulder) landed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.

McGowin recorded his first career save in Wednesday's 14-4 rout of Atlanta, allowing four runs on five hits over three innings while striking out six.

The right-hander was shifted to the bullpen when Anibal Sanchez was re-instated from the injured list earlier in the day, and McGowin wasn't exactly entrusted with high-leverage work, taking over from Sanchez with a 14-0 lead in the seventh. He now has a 9.90 ERA and 11:2 K:BB through 10 innings, having served up three homers in that stretch -- including a grand slam to Austin Riley on Wednesday.

McGowin allowed five runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk across four innings in a no-decision against the Marlins on Friday.

The 27-year-old lasted a little longer into his second career major league start, but the stat line wasn't much better. In two career starts, he's allowed a run per inning and opposing hitters have batted .310. He also has a 1.57 WHIP and five strikeouts in seven innings. As long as Anibal Sanchez (hamstring) returns as expected next week, McGowin won't remain in the Nationals rotation.

McGowin has been confirmed as Friday's starter against the Marlins, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Anibal Sanchez (hamstring) and Jeremy Hellickson (shoulder) are both on the 10-day injured list, so the Nationals had to dip into their organizational pitching depth. Fortunately, Sanchez is expected to return to the rotation next week, so this should just be a one-time spot start for McGowin. He has a 4.32 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 50:12 K:BB in 41.2 innings (eight starts) this year at Triple-A. It is an appealing matchup on paper, but McGowin is 27 years old and has only made one career start in the majors for a reason.

McGowin fared extremely well during his first start -- and fourth appearance -- in the majors, striking out four and allowing four baserunners in four innings. The right-hander retired his first 11 batters but was beginning to labor in the fifth frame. With only a few games left on the schedule, this will most likely be McGowin's final appearance in the 2018 season.

McGowin will start Wednesday against the Marlins, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.

McGowin will step into the rotation for a spot start in place of Tanner Roark, who is away from the Nationals to be with his wife and newborn child. The right-hander has appeared strictly out of the bullpen since joining the big club at the start of September, so he likely won't toss more than one or two innings before exiting. While McGowin has struggled during his time with the Nationals (allowing two runs on two homers through 2.2 innings of relief), he posted a 1.20 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 94:19 K:BB through eight starts with Triple-A Syracuse prior to earning a promotion.

While the 26-year-old righty didn't enter 2018 with much fanfare, he had a career year in the minors, most notably logging a 1.20 ERA and 0.66 WHIP with 44 punchouts in 52.2 innings (eight starts) at Triple-A. Assuming he gets into a game this month, it will represent the journeyman's big-league debut. He could get a spot start or two, but will likely be used primarily out of the bullpen.

McGowan has been lights-out at Triple-A Syracuse through eight starts (52.2 innings) this season, going 3-2 with a 1.20 ERA and 0.66 WHIP with 44 punchouts. He's worked his way through Washington's minor-league system as a starter in 2018, but may be relegated to a bullpen role with the big club, at least initially.

Acquired from the Angels in the Danny Espinosa deal this offseason, McGowin will at least get a better pitching environment at Triple-A Syracuse this year (compared to Salt Lake last year) as he attempts to sharpen his control and improve on his 2016 numbers. He's a long shot to see any action in the majors this season.

McGowin was traded to the Nationals on Saturday in part of a deal that sent Danny Espinosa to the Angels, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

The 25-year-old right-hander spent last season at Triple-A Salt Lake where he was hit hard, notching a 6.11 ERA to go with a 1.64 WHIP over the course of 22 starts. The Nationals have yet to announce where McGowin will be assigned, but given their rotational depth at the major league level, he'll likely spend 2017 in the minors.
