Player Outlook
Joshua Lowe came into the 2023 draft season surrounded with the usual uncertain playing time which clouds outlooks of Tampa Bay players but finished the season as the 12th-best fantasy outfielder. We knew Lowe could steal bags as he swiped them at an 88% success rate dating back to 2019 and at a 96% rate (54 of 56) over the previous two seasons heading into 2023. Lowe not only made the opening day roster, but he went 32 of 35 stealing bases while throwing in 20 homers and a solid .292 batting average. Lowe's overall numbers took a hit in July when he went through a massive slump which saw him hit .197 with a 34% strikeout rate and we later learned he and his family were dealing with some unfortunate medical news regarding his mom's health. Lowe rebounded nicely to finish the season and should find himself in the upper half of the lineup on a more regular basis in 2024 to take full advantage of his baserunning acumen.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Plays nine innings in rehab game

Lowe (oblique) played nine innings in center field and went 0-for-3 with a walk during a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham on Friday. Lowe was originally set to begin his rehab assignment Thursday, but the game was rained out. Perhaps most notable about his initial appearance was his defensive position, as he's primarily played right field in the majors. However, with Jose Siri struggling early, the team could opt to replace him with Lowe and rely on a combination of Richie Palacios and Amed Rosario in right field.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Beginning rehab stint Thursday

Lowe (oblique) is slated to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Best of all, Rays manager Kevin Cash said that Lowe might not need too much time at Triple-A given how well he's been feeling. Lowe has been playing in games at extended spring training, and it sounds like he's moved past the Grade 1 right oblique strain that shelved him to begin the season. A return before the end of April would seem to be back on the table for Lowe, who hit 20 homers and stole 32 bases in a breakout 2023 campaign.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Closing in on rehab assignment

Lowe (oblique) will play in two more extended spring training games in Port Charlotte, Fla., on Monday and Tuesday, and if all goes well, he could soon be sent to Triple-A Durham on a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. Lowe was limited to only two Grapefruit League games; first the outfielder was shelved with left hip inflammation, and then he suffered a Grade 1 right oblique strain just as he was nearing his return. With that, he is expected to need something close to a full spring training's worth of at-bats during his rehab assignment, which likely pushes his 2024 debut to early May. Lowe broke out last season at the age of 25, batting .292 with 20 homers and 32 steals, and he will be a lineup fixture for Tampa Bay upon his return.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Hits IL, will miss beyond 10 days

The Rays placed Lowe (oblique) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Though Lowe is dealing with a Grade 1 right oblique strain -- the most mild degree of strain -- he has yet to resume baseball activities since suffering the injury in mid-March and is on track to miss more than the minimum 10 days. According to MLB.com, Lowe will essentially need to complete a full spring training progression once he's cleared for activities, so at this stage, he's likely tracking for a late-April or early-May return. While Lowe is on the shelf to open the season, Richie Palacios, Harold Ramirez and Amed Rosario could all be in store for extra playing time in the corner outfield or at designated hitter.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Out with oblique injury

Lowe (hip) will begin the season on the injured list after being diagnosed with a Grade 1 right oblique strain Sunday, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 26-year-old was poised to return to the lineup for Sunday's Grapefruit League game against Pittsburgh after missing the first half of March with left hip inflammation, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, but the oblique issue will instead keep him sidelined. It's unclear when Lowe may be able to return, but he'll likely require a ramp-up period once healthy since he's played in just two games during spring training.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Close to resuming activities

Lowe (hip) will be re-evaluated Tuesday and could resume baseball activities within the next couple days, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Lowe has been shut down for the last few days with left hip inflammation but appears to be making nice progress. More will be known about his outlook in the coming days, but Lowe remains confident that he will be available for the Rays on Opening Day.

  • Rays' Josh Lowe: Shut down with hip inflammation

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Thursday that Lowe has been shut down from baseball activities for the next six days due to left hip inflammation, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. While Lowe could be cleared to resume activities next week once the shutdown period ends, Topkin suggests that the outfielder won't immediately be rushed back into games and may not re-enter the Grapefruit League lineup for the next 10-to-15 days. So long as Lowe is playing again by mid-March, his availability for Opening Day shouldn't be in much peril, but any setback along the way would put the 26-year-old at risk of a stint on the injured list.
