  • Rockies' JD Hammer: Misses out on Opening Day roster

The Rockies reassigned Hammer to their minor-league camp Thursday. Hammer took himself out of consideration for a spot in the Rockies' Opening Day bullpen by giving up five earned runs on five hits over three innings across his three Cactus League appearances. The 27-year-old, who previously made 40 relief appearances in the majors with the Phillies between the 2019 and 2021 seasons, will report to Triple-A Albuquerque to begin the 2022 campaign, though he could request a release from his minor-league contract at some point if he recognizes a better opportunity with another organization.

  • Rockies' JD Hammer: Joining Colorado

Hammer signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Hammer elected free agency after being outrighted by the Phillies earlier in November, and he's now latched on with the Rockies. The 27-year-old had a 4.95 ERA over 20 big-league innings and a 3.80 ERA in 23.2 frames at Triple-A last season.

  • Phillies' JD Hammer: Optioned to Lehigh Valley

Hammer was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The right-hander has endured a rough month of September that was topped off by allowing five runs on four hits and a walk across just one-third of an inning during Thursday's win over the Cubs. Hammer held a tidy 1.65 ERA and 1.16 WHIP at the conclusion of August, so the Phillies will hope he can regain that form with Lehigh Valley and become an option to rejoin the major-league bullpen before season's end. Reliever Damon Jones was called up to take Hammer's spot on the 28-man roster.

  • Phillies' JD Hammer: Reinstated from COVID-19 IL

Hammer was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list prior to Tuesday's game against the Nationals. Hammer landed on the COVID-19 IL on July 20. He wound up spending just seven days off the active roster, which indicates he most likely never tested positive for the virus. The right-hander has not appeared in a big-league game since mid-June, but he did not allow an earned run in either of his two one-inning outings this season.

  • Phillies' JD Hammer: Placed on COVID IL

Hammer (undisclosed) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The Phillies continue to have COVID-19 issues, with Hammer and Bailey Falter the latest players to land on the specialized injured list. It's unclear whether either player has tested positive for the virus, but they'll remain away from the team until they clear the health and safety protocols.

The Phillies added Hammer to their 60-man roster pool Thursday. Hammer attending spring training with the Phillies but was an early cut, as he was outrighted off the 40-man roster and sent to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Feb. 11. The Phillies didn't bring Hammer back for summer camp, but the reliever will now head to Lehigh Valley to train regularly with the other minor-league players in the organization's 60-man pool. Hammer made 20 appearances for the big club in 2019, posting a 3.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 19 innings.

  • Phillies' JD Hammer: Remains with Phillies

Hammer cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Hammer's 13:12 K:BB in 19 innings as a rookie last season didn't come close to backing up his 3.79 ERA. He could certainly play a role for the Phillies this season, but it's unlikely to be a major one.

  • Phillies' JD Hammer: Dropped from 40-man roster

Hammer was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Wednesday. Hammer recorded a 3.79 ERA in his 19-inning debut for the Phillies last season, but that came with a poor 13:12 K:BB. The move clears a spot for the Phillies to claim Deolis Guerra off waivers from the Brewers.

  • Phillies' JD Hammer: Sent to Triple-A

Hammer was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday. Hammer has a solid 3.79 ERA in 19 innings with the Phillies this season, but the underlying numbers don't come close to supporting that figure. Both his 16.1 percent strikeout rate and 14.8 percent walk rate are quite poor. He'll make way on the roster for Mike Morin, acquired in a trade from the Twins on Saturday.

  • Phillies' J.D. Hammer: Delayed at start of spring

Hammer has yet to start throwing during spring training, but said Monday that he isn't dealing with any sort of injury, Matt Gelb of The Athletic Philadelphia reports. It appears the Phillies are simply taking it easy on the 23-year-old Hammer after he compiled 71.1 innings in his second professional season -- nearly double his total from 2016 -- before taking part in the Arizona Fall League. Acquired from the Rockies last July, Hammer quickly distinguished himself as one of the Phillies' top relief prospects in the lower minors after posting a 0.57 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB in 15.2 innings at High-A Clearwater following the trade.
