Yankees' Neil Walker: Heads to bench
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker is out of the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.

Walker is on the bench for the second straight day with the Blue Jays bringing lefties on the hill on both occasions. With Gleyber Torres (hip) on the disabled list, Walker received the nod at the keystone in the series opener against Blue Jays right-hander Sam Gaviglio, going 0-for-3 with a walk in that contest. For now, it looks like Walker could handle the larger side of a platoon at second base with Brandon Drury until Torres is available.

Yankees' Neil Walker: Likely to replace Torres
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker is expected to serve as the Yankees' primary option at second base while Gleyber Torres (hip) is on the disabled list, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports.

Utility man Tyler Wade will be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday to restore some depth in the infield, but his .129 average over 93 career MLB at-bats makes it unlikely he'll challenge Walker for the everyday role at the keystone. Instead, Walker's top competition could be Brandon Drury, who has been the better performer at the plate but hasn't seen any action at second base in 2018 in the majors or minors. At least until Drury gets familiar with the position again, Walker looks like he could see steady at-bats through the All-Star break while the Yankees await Torres' return. The switch-hitting veteran probably won't warrant immediate attention outside of AL-only formats until he shows marked improvement from his sickly .188/.268/.259 slash line.

Yankees' Neil Walker: Picks up start at keystone
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker will start at second base and bat ninth Sunday against the Angels, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.

Walker has been seeing most of his action at first base in recent weeks, but he'll receive a turn at his natural position in the series finale with everyday second baseman Gleyber Torres receiving a rare day off. Despite being included in the starting nine Sunday, Walker seems likely to be a fixture on the bench in most games going forward following Greg Bird's return from the 10-day disabled list a day earlier. The lefty-hitting Bird should see the bulk of the starts at first base, with the right-handed Tyler Austin (.931 OPS against southpaws this season) likely representing a more ideal platoon mate than the switch-hitting Walker, who has historically been more productive against right-handed pitching.

Yankees' Neil Walker: Not starting Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker is not starting against the Royals on Saturday.

Since May 2, Walker has started at first against every righty while Tyler Austin has gotten the nod against every lefty. That setup will continue against the southpaw Danny Duffy on Saturday. Walker has struggled so far this season, hitting just .211/.298/.257 with no homers in 31 games, though he does have 10 hits in his last 29 at-bats.

Yankees' Neil Walker: On bench Tuesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Walker is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Nationals, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

As has been the case recently, Walker will head to the bench as Tyler Austin gets the start at first base with left-hander Gio Gonzalez starting for the opposition. The switch-hitting Walker has seemingly worked his way into the larger side of a platoon at first base -- thanks to his strong play this month and Austin's struggles -- so look for him to rejoin the starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale against righty Tanner Roark.
