As the Lakers head into a Sunday afternoon showdown against Oklahoma City, trying to get some momentum off a Friday win against Utah, they have more good news on the way. Backup point guard Steve Blake, who has missed all but seven games this season after abdomen surgery, is set to return Tuesday, via the man himself on Twitter.
Blake's return seems like a so-what to many fans, but honestly his tenure under Mike Brown was contrary to much of his play throughout his career. Throw in the fact that point guards thrive under Mike D'Antoni, and the fact that this means fewer minutes for Chris Duhon, and this is a considerable win for the Lakers.
Blake also provides shooting help, and with Steve Nash at the ripe old age of 38, the Lakers need to limit the star starter's minutes. Blake can spread the floor, something the Lakers have struggled with without Blake, essentially having to hope and pray for Metta World Peace's game-by-game coin flip of a 3-point shot lands heads. Blake can also be used in dual-point-guard lineups with Nash against smaller teams and defend the better opponent, further covering Nash's defensive weakness while giving the Lakers multiple ball-handlers.
That said, if Blake's struggles weren't the product of system and circumstance, this won't make any difference. But even a little bit of help is something the Lakers will gladly take at this point as they try and stave off the pending Lakocalypse they've been facing the last month.
