VIDEO: Cavs' LeBron James subs himself out, gets called for technical
LeBron James doesn't wait for the officials to sub him out and gets called for a technical foul in the process.
Against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night, LeBron James became frustrated with himself for allowing the ball to go out of bounds. So he decided to sub himself out of the game, to get refocused and catch his breath. The only problem was that James didn't wait for the officials to actually signal for the substitution, he just walked straight to the bench.
Without James, Cleveland had to play 4-on-5 for a few seconds before the officials saw what was happening and called a technical on the Cavs.
James was supposed to come out of the game at the next dead ball as Richard Jefferson was waiting to come in for him. But he just assumed the officials would notice Jefferson waiting by the scorer's table and took himself out of the game which is against the rules.
Afterwards, James told reporters that he did apologize to his teammates for his mistake.
"I blew a gasket. You know what that mean?" James said after the game. "I apologized to my teammates for it."
James was asked what he was so upset about, considering the Cavs' lead was so large at the time. "That's not the point," he said.
Cleveland coach David Blatt made light of the situation after the game.
"Well, he was frustrated. He knew we weren't playing right," Blatt said. "And (he) thought we were playing hockey. A hockey sub.
"You know, Bron is a lot of things -- a lot of great things -- but probably where you're not going to see him is out there playing for the (Lake Erie) Monsters (an AHL team based in Cleveland) or the (New York) Rangers. You know what I mean?
"But he was frustrated. I understand his frustration, but obviously, you shouldn't do that."
Blatt could joke about it since the Cavs easily defeated the Hawks, 109-97.
