Steelers' Kwon Alexander: Agrees to terms with Steelers
Alexander agreed to terms on a contract with Pittsburgh on Saturday pending the results of a physical, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Barring any unforeseen results from this physical, Alexander should be set to vie for a significant role with Pittsburgh, which also added fellow inside linebackers Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts via free agency this offseason. The 28-year-old Alexander has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, playing just 38 regular-season games from 2018 to 2021. However, he did play all 17 regular-season games for the Jets in 2022, tallying 69 tackles -- the most since his 2017 season with Tampa Bay. The 227-pound linebacker is regarded as one of the league's most athletic off-ball linebackers when healthy, showcasing unique skills in space. Alexander should be a natural fit in the Steelers' veteran-laden defensive unit.... See More ... See Less -
Saints' Kwon Alexander: Back from COVID list
Alexander (illness) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Alexander tested positive for the virus over the weekend and missed Monday's loss to the Dolphins, though he's now clear of the health and safety protocols. The 27-year-old had only one tackle while playing 81 percent of the defensive snaps Week 15 against Tampa Bay.... See More ... See Less -
Saints' Kwon Alexander: Headed to COVID list
Alexander tested positive for the coronavirus Sunday and will be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list prior to Monday's game against the Dolphins, Jeff Duncan of The Athletic reports. His absence will leave a hole in the Saints' linebacker unit that already has Demario Davis and Kaden Elliss on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Pete Werner and Zack Baun are likely to handle significant roles in the New Orleans linebacking corps in Week 16.... See More ... See Less -
Saints' Kwon Alexander: Racks up two sacks
Alexander had four tackles (four solo) and two sacks in Sunday's win over the Jets. Alexander spent much of his time behind the line of scrimmage Sunday, as three of his four tackles were either a sack or tackle for loss. The linebacker has seen an increased role in the past four games, playing at least 74 percent of defensive snaps and tallying 24 tackles (20 solo) over that stretch. In nine games, Alexander has 38 tackles (30 solo), three sacks and one interception.... See More ... See Less -
Saints' Kwon Alexander: Back at practice
Alexander (elbow) was designated to return from injured reserve Tuesday, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports. Alexander has been on injured reserve since suffering the elbow injury in the season opener, but he's now been cleared to return to practice. The move opens a 21-day practice window for the veteran linebacker to be reinstated to the active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Kwon Alexander: More progress in recovery
Alexander (Achilles) is making significant improvements in leg strength and has resumed non-contact football drills, Kyle Mosley of Sports Illustrated reports. Alexander continues to distance himself from a torn Achilles he sustained last December. While there have yet to be any reports of him receiving interest on the free-agent market, there are presumably a number of teams keeping tabs on the 26-year-old linebacker, who averaged over 111 tackles per year for Tampa from 2015 to 2017.... Kwon Alexander: Moving well post injury
Alexander appears to be recovering well from his torn Achilles, posting a video detailing his workout routine, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. The video is impressive considering Alexander is just shy of four months removed from tearing his Achilles. The former Saints middle linebacker is currently an unrestricted free agent, but judging by Saturday's video it's entirely possible the 26-year-old could be available for a respective team's training camp should he get signed.... Saints' Kwon Alexander: Carted to locker room
Alexander was carted to the locker room after injuring his foot or ankle in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Vikings, Amie Just of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Alexander was injured at the very end of the third quarter, finishing his afternoon with three tackles. The Saints can turn to Alex Anzalone, Craig Robertson or Zack Baun next to Demario Davis at linebacker.... See More ... See Less -
Saints' Kwon Alexander: No longer on exempt list
Alexander was lifted from the commissioner's exempt list Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Alexander was sent over to the Saints from the 49ers prior to the trade deadline, but he wasn't eligible to play in Week 9 due to COVID protocols. He'll be able to participate in practice with the team and suit up for Week 10 against his old San Francisco teammates now that the roster exemption has been lifted.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Kwon Alexander: Doubtful for divisional tilt
Alexander (ankle) is considered doubtful for Sunday's game versus the Seahawks, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Alexander's set to miss a third straight game, but his upgrade to limited participation Thursday signals that he could return to action soon. It'll still be a short turnaround for Alexander to be ready for the Week 9 matchup against Green Bay, a Thursday night affair. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and Azeez Al-Shaair will both handle some of the reps left behind by Alexander.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Kwon Alexander: May have high-ankle sprain
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that there is a possibility Alexander has suffered a high-ankle sprain, Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee reports. A subsequent report by Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area revealed that more specific information is expected to arrive on the matter later this week, but for now, the 49er faithful is left wondering whether the defense has suffered yet another injury setback. Alexander has averaged six tackles per game, with three tackles for loss and one forced fumble through the first five weeks of 2020. He would join defensive stalwarts Nick Bosa (knee-ACL), Richard Sherman (calf), K'Waun Williams (knee-ACL) and Dee Ford (neck) on the inactive list if forced to miss any time because of the injury.... 49ers' Kwon Alexander: Tallies nine tackles
Alexander tallied nine tackles, including one for a loss, in the team's Week 1 contest against Arizona. Alexander finished third on the team in tackles, though he wasn't particularly involved early on as his first stop came late in the second quarter. He didn't receive credit for a forced fumble, but he also combined with Nick Bosa on a hit that jarred the ball loose from Chase Edmonds on Arizona's opening driving in the second half. Alexander played a decreased role in the 49ers defense during an injury-riddled 2019 season, though he appears healthy and ready to roll early early on in 2020.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Kwon Alexander: Gets biceps surgery
Alexander had surgery Friday to repair a biceps injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Signed to a four-year, $54 million contract last offseason, Alexander suffered a torn pectoral in late October but made it back on the field for the playoffs. He reportedly played through a biceps injury in the Super Bowl, finishing without a tackle despite playing 70 percent of defensive snaps. Alexander will turn 26 in August and should have time to get healthy before Week 1.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Kwon Alexander: Limited in Thursday's practice
Alexander (pectoral) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Alexander has put together five straight limited practice sessions since the NFC Championship Game against Green Bay, and he'll have one more opportunity to upgrade his activity ahead of Super Bowl 54 versus the Chiefs. The 25-year-old has had a cap on his reps since returning from injured reserve prior to the divisional round, and it remains to be seen if he'll handle a full workload against Kansas City.... 49ers' Kwon Alexander: Wearing non-contact jersey
Alexander (pectoral) was spotted wearing a blue non-contact jersey during the portion of Thursday's practice open to the media, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Alexander appears set to be listed as 'limited' on Thursday's practice report, just as he was during Wednesday's estimated session. The starting linebacker will look to avoid any setbacks while ramping up his activity over the next week and a half, with the goal of playing increased snaps during San Francisco's Super Bowl matchup with the Chiefs on Feb. 2.... 49ers' Kwon Alexander: Listed as limited Wednesday
Alexander (pectoral) was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Alexander entered Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Packers without an injury designation, and he managed to play 20 defensive snaps (32 percent) during the win. The starting linebacker is in good shape to suit up for the Feb. 2 Super Bowl matchup with the Chiefs, and he could see an increased workload if the next two weeks of practice go well for him.... 49ers' Kwon Alexander: Set to be activated
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday that Alexander (pectoral) will be activated from injured reserve ahead of Saturday's NFC divisional-round contest against the Vikings, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Alexander is on track to suit up when the 49ers host Minnesota on Saturday, though he'll almost certainly operate on a snap count. In order to activate Alexander to the 53-man unit, the 49ers will need to make a corresponding move to free up a roster spot.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Kwon Alexander: Not ruled out for season
Alexander (pectoral) is unlikely to return this season, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Coach Kyle Shanahan deemed Alexander's chance to return this year "a long shot" but added the 49ers had not completely ruled their star linebacker out for the season. Rookie Dre Greenlaw continues to hold down the weak side for the 25-year-old and has at least six tackles in each of his last six games.... See More ... See Less -
49ers' Kwon Alexander: Set for season-ending surgery
Alexander was confirmed to have suffered a torn pectoral and will undergo season-ending surgery next week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Alexander sustained the injury during Thursday's win over the Cardinals, and it will end his 2019 season after eight games. The 25-year-old should be placed on injured reserve in the near future to free up space on the 53-man roster, while the surgery guarantees he won't be able to return during a potential postseason run....
