The Patriots released Tobin on Monday, Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald reports.
To make room for Rex Burkhead -- who was activated off injured reserve -- the Patriots decided to cut ties with Tobin. The 28-year-old offensive tackle was signed in early November, though he failed to appear in a game for New England.
Tobin signed a deal with New England last March but failed to make the 53-man roster. The 28-year-old then signed with San Francisco in mid-September but was later released to make space for linebacker Reuben Foster. Tobin will now likely be the fourth tackle on the team behind Trent Brown, Marcus Cannon and LaAdrian Waddle.
Tobin has bounced around the league some but brings some real starting experience to the 49ers offensive line. However, he failed to make the Patriots' 53-man roster after spending the offseason in New England.
