Downing signed a deal with the Esbjerg Energy of the Metal Ligaen in Denmark on Monday.
Downing has spent his entire pro career in the minors after his four-year career at the University of New Hampshire. He pocketed 19 goals for AHL Iowa during the 2015-16 campaign. Having never reached the NHL level, the 27-year-old will likely spend the rest of his career floating around different leagues.
Downing signed a one-year contract with the Oilers on Saturday.
He went undrafted and has yet to reach the NHL level, but Downing enjoyed a successful collegiate career for the University of New Hampshire (2011-15), before tacking on 70 points in 108 games for AHL Iowa -- a minor-league affiliate of the Wild -- over the past three years. He'd also been with AHL Tucson for 12 contests. Downing is an organizational depth option for the Oilers.
Downing was one of eight players recalled by the Wild, with AHL Iowa's 2015-16 season now complete.
Downing, who notched 19 goals and 40 points in 56 AHL games this season, finished second on Iowa in both goals and scoring in his first full season as a pro. Along with fellow recalls Kurtis Gabriel, Tyler Graovac, Stephen Michalek, Zack Mitchell, Zach Palmquist, Tyson Strachan and Hunter Warner, the 24-year-old Downing will give the big club some added postseason roster depth, though injuries will need to hit for any of the aforementioned players to crack the Minnesota lineup in the short-term.
The Wild activated Downing from injured reserve non-roster and assigned him to AHL Iowa on Friday.
Downing suffered a lower-body injury while playing in the 2015 NHL Prospects Tournament in September, and has been sidelined with the ailment ever since. Now healthy, the 23-year-old will head to AHL Iowa, where he could make his season debut as soon as soon as Saturday against AHL Lake Erie.
