  • Lightning's Ryan Callahan: Feeling better than he has in long time

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/5/17) Callahan has put his nagging hip problems behind him and says "this is the best I've felt in a long time," reports the Tampa Bay Times.

He is back to playing a physical, gritty game and that's great for the Bolts and fantasy owners alike. "There's no hesitation," Callahan said. "For me to be effective, I've got to play that way. That's when I'm at my best, is when I'm blocking shots, taking the body, getting in front of the net." Callahan will start the season on the second line with Tyler Johnson and Alex Killorn.

Lightning's Ryan Callahan: Ready to rock

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/3/17) Callahan (undisclosed) is listed on the Opening Night roster for Friday's home contest against the Panthers.

An injury-prone winger, Callahan found his way into just 18 games last season, with two hip surgeries factored into his abbreviated campaign. While the nature of his latest ailment was not disclosed, we at least know that it stemmed from the winger blocking a shot in a preseason contest Saturday. At any rate, it seems safe to roll out Callahan if you've taken a chance on him for the 2017-18 fantasy season.

Lightning's Ryan Callahan: Leaves Saturday's game

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(10/2/17) Callahan (undisclosed) was forced to leave Saturday's 3-2 preseason victory over Nashville after blocking a shot, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

When the contest ended coach Jon Cooper said the exit was just a precaution, but with Tampa Bay's season starting Friday, the injury is certainly worth keeping an eye on. Callahan was limited to only 18 games and four points last season after hip labrum issues, and a new injury would certainly be disheartening for the veteran. If he's healthy for the opener, Callahan will likely skate in a bottom-six role.

Lightning's Ryan Callahan: Feels great to be healthy again

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(9/2/17) Callahan (hip) has joined teammates in pre-training camp on-ice workouts and says it "... feels good to just be healthy again," reports the Tampa Bay Times.

Callahan was all over the ice. He joined the rush and crashed the net. He fired the puck and scored. And he laughed. That's great news for a guy who only played 18 games last season. However, fantasy owners need not pay too close attention to Callahan on draft day. The game has gotten considerably faster with each passing year and this 12-year veteran's already-slow wheels and history of hip injuries make it likely he'll be a step behind.

Lightning's Ryan Callahan: Ready for training camp

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
(8/22/17) Callahan (hip) confirmed that he will not face any restrictions in training camp, NHL.com reports.

Fantasy owners may be reluctant to put too much stock in a player who underwent two hip surgeries during the 2016-17 season, but the experienced winger has averaged 0.55 points per game over 11 years split between the Rangers and Lightning, so he should at least be considered as a flier in leagues with deep rosters.
