EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Henrik Lundqvist bounced up in celebration after stopping Devils rookie Travis Zajac in the eighth round of the shootout Tuesday night.
The goalie was pumped up after clinching the New York Rangers' 3-2 win over New Jersey.
"We just wanted to win so bad," Lundqvist said. "We needed this. We know we're a good team. We just have to stay confident."
The victory ended a five-game road losing streak and was the Rangers' second straight overall after dropping seven in a row.
Marcel Hossa got the deciding goal in the shootout. He faked Martin Brodeur to the ice before flipping a shot into the net.
Before taking his turn, Hossa contemplated what his brother, Marian, one of the NHL's top goal scorers, would do.
"I just faked a shot and put it in the other side," Hossa said. "I was thinking about a five-hole shot, but I thought maybe my brother scored too many goals through the five hole."
Michael Nylander, Brendan Shanahan and Matt Cullen also beat Brodeur in the shootout.
"Most of these guys stopped in front of me," Brodeur said. "It kind of threw off my rhythm. They come in and make a quick stop. There is a little angle that I go back. They were able to make a move and get by me."
Zach Parise, Patrik Elias and Madden connected for New Jersey in the shootout.
In regulation, the Rangers got goals from Nylander and Petr Prucha. John Madden and Jamie Langenbrunner scored for the Devils, who had won three in a row.
"It was a tough game that could have gone either way," Devils coach Claude Julien said. "We still had an opportunity to win in the shootout. It was a hard-earned point. We'll take it and move on."
The teams traded goals in the third period with Langenbrunner tying the game at 2 on a power-play goal with 4:12 remaining. Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez took swipes at Brian Rafalski's rebound that landed in the crease before Langenbrunner deposited a backhander for the equalizer.
Earlier in the period, Prucha gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 9:05. Karel Rachunek shot from the right point and Jaromir Jagr deflected the puck toward the slot where Prucha tipped in past Brodeur.
In the overtime, the Rangers outshot the Devils 4-2 and came close to winning in the final minute when Jagr fed a pass to Martin Straka. Brodeur made a sprawling save to send the game into the shootout.
Madden staked the Devils to the early lead with the only goal of the first period. Taking a cross-ice pass from Sergei Brylin, Madden pulled up in the right circle before taking a shot that glanced off Rangers defenseman Thomas Pock and beat Lundqvist with 1:28 remaining.
The score capped a strong period for Madden, who had four shots. The Devils had a 9-5 edge in shots over the first 20 minutes.
The Rangers, shut out in their two prior road games, pressed the attack more aggressively in the second. They finally cashed in when Nylander scored on the power play at 14:56. Using Devils defenseman Paul Martin as a screen, Nylander fired a shot from the high slot that hit Brodeur in the glove and popped into the net.
The goal ended the Rangers' goal drought on the road at 186:39.
New York outshot New Jersey 11-6 in the second period.
