Boston at Philadelphia

Third-period spurt propels Flyers past sinking Bruins

PHILADELPHIA -- Martin Biron is doing his best to make the worst team in the league respectable.

The Flyers' goalie picked up his third victory since being acquired by Philadelphia, stopping 26 shots in a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

Biron came over from Buffalo on Feb. 27 for a second-round draft pick. He's 3-1-1 since the deal, though the Flyers are still last in the league with 49 points.

"It wasn't like we didn't have any chances," Bruins No. 2 goalie Joey MacDonald, who made 25 saves. "Biron just made some great saves. We just have to keep battling. We're working really hard. We're just not getting the breaks."

Mike Richards took advantage of a Boston turnover to score the tie-breaking goal early in the third period.

"I think everyone was kind of up to the challenge today," Richards said. "It seems like we played a good sound physical game. We did a good job getting after the defense and tried to turn pucks over."

Richards put in his own rebound for his seventh goal 1:16 into the period after taking a pass from Dimitry Afanasenkov, who stole the puck from Boston's Zdeno Charo after the big defenseman fell in his own zone.

"We had a good forecheck," Richards said. "We put the puck in the right area and it allowed us to get in there and get some hits and make them turn the puck over."

Simon Gagne, Scottie Upshall, and Afanasenkov also scored for the Flyers, who had dropped two of their previous three games.

Gagne, who put the Flyers ahead 1:58 into the first period with his team-leading 37th goal, injured his left groin early in the third period. He won't play the next two games at Phoenix and Dallas.

Gagne, who said he felt "not too good right now," added that he would stay home and do some rehab and get an MRI on Monday.

"My target to return is Thursday night against Atlanta."

Upshall scored shorthanded at 13:17 of the third period and Afanasenkov added an empty net goal with 1:42 left.

"Everyone is just buying into the program," Upshall said. "We're going out and working hard and making simple plays. We're taking pride in being able to go out there and win games."

Dennis Wideman scored for the Bruins, who have lost three straight games and six of their last eight.

The Bruins failed on five power-play opportunities and are 0-for-22 in their last five games.

"The power play is our Achilles' heal right now," Boston coach Dave Lewis said. "We don't score and then we lost momentum. You try different things (to fix it), but sometimes it might be better to leave it alone."

After Gagne scored on a slap shot from the left circle, Wideman tied it for the Bruins with his sixth goal at 7:30 of the period.

Notes

  • Philadelphia D Joni Pitkanen's assist on Gagne's goal was his career-high 34th for a season.
  • Philadelphia was 0-for-4 and has scored only three goals in its last 49 power play opportunities.
  • Boston C Marc Savard, who assisted on Wideman's goal, has scored nine points (three goals, six assists) in four games against the Flyers.
  • Savard and Boston's other centers, Patrice Bergeron and Phil Kessel, have not scored a goal in seven games.
