Cooney (shoulder) was claimed off waivers by the Indians on Friday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

Cooney missed the entirety of the 2016 campaign due to a shoulder injury, but the Indians decided to swipe him up given his strong history of success as a starter. The left-hander posted a 3.16 ERA and a 29:10 K:BB ratio in six starts in the big leagues back in 2015, so if he can get back to full health prior to the start of spring training, Cooney realistically could compete for a rotation spot at the major league level.
