Jorge Alfaro: Hits open market

Alfaro cleared waivers and elected free agency Saturday after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republicanreports.

Alfaro appeared in eight games during his brief time with Boston and went 2-for-17 in 20 plate appearances. The veteran backstop will look to latch on elsewhere, likely via a minor-league deal.
