Reds' Austin Hendrick: Drafted 12th overall by Reds
The Reds have selected Hendrick with the 12th overall pick in the 2020 first-year player draft.
Hendrick makes loud, violent contact that should translate into 70-grade raw power down the road. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound lefty slugger's maximum exit velocity (105 mph) ranks in the 99.8 percentile while his bat speed is in the 98th percentile in his class, according to Perfect Game. Whether or not he makes enough contact to get to that power regularly in games will be what makes or breaks his pro career. He has made a lot of mechanical adjustments to his swing and has been unable to shake concerns over his sub-par approach. Coming from Pennsylvania, he has faced a lower level of competition than most of his peers in warm-weather states. Another slight knock: Hendrick turns 19 on June 15, so he is one of the older prep players in the class. He is a solid runner with an above-average arm, so he could theoretically play all three outfield spots, but he will probably be limited to a corner at physical maturity.
