Happy Anniversary: Robin Yount's 3,000th hit
On this date in 1992, Robin Yount became the 17th man in MLB history to collect 3,000 career hits.
Sept. 9 actually houses quite a bit of baseball history goodness, such as Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker debuting together, Randy Johnson recording his fifth consecutive 300-strikeout season, Ted Williams tying Mel Ott with his 511th homer, Sandy Koufax throwing a perfect game to one-up Bob Hendley's one-hitter, 1-0, and much more (does Bud Selig being named interim commissioner in 1992 strike your fancy?)
But since the Brewers are struggling mightily right now on the field, let's give their fans a reason to smile.
On Sept. 9, 1992, Hall of Famer Robin Yount collected his 3,000th career hit.
Here it is, in front of a sold out home crowd in Milwaukee County Stadium, fittingly called by Bob Uecker:
Yount was, at the time, the 17th player to reach the milestone and is still the third-youngest to ever get there -- after Ty Cobb and Hank Aaron. Yount would end his career with 3,142 career knocks, which is now good for 18th on the career list.
The two-time MVP also ranks 39th in runs, 31st in total bases, 18th in doubles and 87th in triples. Oh, and 42nd among position players in career WAR, if that's your sorta thing.
So Happy Anniversary to both Yount and Brewers fans alike. The career Brewer was enshrined into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1999.
