After the Angels made a bold move to acquire Zack Greinke, all the trade talk is now focused on the future of Marlins right-handed pitcher Josh Johnson. Here's the latest:
- The Rangers will respond, but it likely won't be with an acquisition of Johnson, tweeted CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler. Instead, Texas could make a play for James Shields, or acquire bullpen help and move Alexi Ogando into the rotation.
- CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman has reported the same: it's "unlikely" the Rangers land Johnson, he tweeted.
- The Dodgers are "still in the mix" for Johnson, Knobler also tweeted. And he's right: it's been a remarkable couple of weeks for Los Angeles' two teams.
- As Johnson rumors heat up, the odds are 50/50 that Johnson will be dealt, wrote MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, and the Rangers are the most aggressive suitor.
- The Marlins aren't overly eager to deal Johnson, Frisaro notes, but at the right price -- if teams meet their high asking price -- they'll pull the trigger.
- The Marlins want a package similar to what San Diego received for Mat Latos: three high-end prospects and a big-league pitcher.
- The Marlins, Frosaro wrote, are perfectly content in keeping Johnson, as he's under contract for next year at $13.75 million. They can always try and deal him in the offseason.
- While Johnson has struggled at times this season, he's healthy, and that's probably the most important factor of all as his name is discussed in trade rumors.
- If the Rangers offer a package centered around third baseman prospect Mike Olt in a trade for Johnson, that'll be enough to get a deal done, tweeted The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant. However, he noted, the Rangers haven't yet indicated that they're willing to offer up Olt. Yet. It's quite possible the Greinke trade changes things, and it's quite possible that we have ourselves an old-fashioned arms race in the AL West, with the trade deadline only a few days away.
