Tigers starter Justin Verlander walked five batters in six innings on Tuesday. Verlander took a no-decision in the 14-inning loss to Pittsburgh, walking the most batters in a start since July 31, 2013.
Verlander allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits, while striking out a season-high three. The veteran right-hander hadn't pitched since June 19 due to back tightness.
"I'd be lying to you if I said it wasn't in the back of my mind a little bit, hoping that it wasn't going to spasm up on me again," Verlander said, per MLB.com. "It was present, but it wasn't impeding me in any way."
