Kevin Shackelford: Released by Reds
Shackelford (elbow) was released by the Reds on Tuesday.
Shackelford's release cleared room for the activation of Anthony DeSclafani from the 60-day DL. This is unsurprising, as Shackelford owned an unsightly 7.88 ERA across eight big-league frames this season and is set to undergo elbow surgery, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati.

Reds' Kevin Shackelford: Sent to minors
Shackelford was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Monday.
Shackelford was likely unavailable for Monday's series opener against the Mets after pitching in each of the past two games, so the Reds opted to send him to the minors in exchange for a fresh bullpen arm in Jackson Stephens. Through four major-league appearances this season (five innings), Shackelford has compiled a 9.00 ERA and 2.40 WHIP. He'll be an option to rejoin the big club when the Reds need a fresh reliever.

Shackelford missed the start of the season with a forearm strain. The 29-year-old had a 4.70 ERA in 30.2 innings in his major-league debut for the Reds last season, though his 3.64 xFIP indicates that he deserved better results. Kevin Quackenbush was designated for assignment to make room for him.

Reds' Kevin Shackelford: Performs well in Double-A rehab appearance
Shackelford (forearm) threw an inning with Double-A Pensacola on Monday as a part of his rehab assignment.
Shackelford looked good in the outing, allowing no runs while striking out one and walking another. This was the right-hander's second appearance with the Blue Wahoos, so he could return to the Reds relatively soon barring any setbacks.

Shackelford (elbow) will start the season on the disabled list, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Shackelford was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.
The 28-year-old returns for his second stint in the majors, replacing Zack Cozart (quad) on the roster. Reds' Kevin Shackelford: Latches on with Reds on NRI contract
Shackelford signed a minor league deal with the Reds on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
The 27-year-old had a solid season in 2016, posting a 2.30 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP with Triple-A Louisville. Shackelford doesn't possess very good peripherals, though (3.78 FIP, 20:13 K:BB), so he'll likely head back to being an organizational depth piece once spring training concludes.
