  • Blue Jays' Blake McFarland: Released but re-signed to minors deal

McFarland was released by the Blue Jays on Tuesday but then re-signed with Toronto on a minor league deal, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.

The Blue Jays released McFarland to free up a spot on the 40-man roster but it seems they had every intention of keeping the 28-year-old in the organization. McFarland has yet to pitch this year, and it's not entirely clear if he'll return from the DL before the end of the minor league season.

  • Blue Jays' Blake McFarland: Struggles with command in spring training

McFarland gave up three hits and a run in just one inning of work this spring for the Blue Jays.

McFarland, an advanced pitching prospect, didn't get many chances to show his stuff, and when he did, he struggled. The youngster threw only seven pitches to the six batters he faced, so he will need to work on his command in the minors this year. After posting an impressive 1.72 ERA and converting 16 of 18 saves at Double-A New Hampshire, the hard-throwing closer will most likely begin the season at Triple-A Buffalo. Expect him to compete for a spot in a crowded Buffalo bullpen, which relied on a closer-by-committee last season.
