Povse hasn't thrown yet in camp but is expected to do so in a few days. Assuming he's able to hit that timeline, he should still be ready to go by Opening Day, but he's unlikely to spend that day on the big-league roster, though, as he was designated for assignment in late January.

Povse was designated for assignment last Sunday but will remain with the Mariners after going unclaimed on waivers. According to TJ Cotterill of The Tacoma News Tribune, the 25-year-old is still set to attend major-league spring training despite posting an 8.84 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over eight starts after his midseason promotion to Tacoma last year.

The towering right-hander has hit a wall at the Triple-A level following a fairly brisk progression up the minor-league ladder prior to last season. After arriving via trade with the Braves in 2017, Povse put together a solid stint at Double-A Arkansas before bumping up to Tacoma to finish off the season. He was hit hard over 13 appearances (five starts), posting a 7.39 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 31.2 innings. It's been more of the same thus far this season, with the fact Povse has already yielded a career-high six home runs certainly playing a significant part in his struggles. The 24-year-old right-hander is also struggling with his control more than he had at any other professional stop.

He will obviously return in the coming weeks from the hamstring injury, but the bigger news is that the Mariners are converting Povse to a bullpen role. In seven starts at Double-A he had logged a 3.82 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 30:11 K:BB in 35.1 innings. The Mariners famously converted Edwin Diaz from a starter to a reliever at Double-A last season, and he needed just 10 appearances out of the bullpen before he was promoted to the big leagues and began his dominant 51.2-inning run that cemented his status as a top-15 closer heading into this season. Povse's stuff isn't quite as electric, but he could move quickly now that he is being developed as a reliever.

The towering righty got into at least the sixth inning in his first four starts before running into trouble against Springfield in an April 30 outing. Povse was touched up for seven earned runs in that appearance, but has otherwise given up one or no earned runs in four other trips to the mound. He's also done an excellent job of keeping the ball in the yard, surrendering just one home run while generating a 29:11 K:BB and a .210 BAA.
