Mariners' Max Povse: Battling sore shoulder
Povse has been delayed in camp due to a sore shoulder, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Povse hasn't thrown yet in camp but is expected to do so in a few days. Assuming he's able to hit that timeline, he should still be ready to go by Opening Day, but he's unlikely to spend that day on the big-league roster, though, as he was designated for assignment in late January.

Mariners' Max Povse: Heads to Triple-A
Povse cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Povse was designated for assignment last Sunday but will remain with the Mariners after going unclaimed on waivers. According to TJ Cotterill of The Tacoma News Tribune, the 25-year-old is still set to attend major-league spring training despite posting an 8.84 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over eight starts after his midseason promotion to Tacoma last year.

Mariners' Max Povse: DFA'd by Seattle
Povse (undisclosed) was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Sunday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Povse was booted off the 40-man roster to make room for Seattle's most recent acquisition, Hunter Strickland. Povse has yet to make his big-league debut, spending time with Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma a season ago. He figures to begin the 2019 campaign with the Rainiers.

Mariners' Max Povse: Getting knocked around at Triple-A level
Povse is 1-6 with an 8.84 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 36.2 innings over eight starts for Triple-A Tacoma.
The towering right-hander has hit a wall at the Triple-A level following a fairly brisk progression up the minor-league ladder prior to last season. After arriving via trade with the Braves in 2017, Povse put together a solid stint at Double-A Arkansas before bumping up to Tacoma to finish off the season. He was hit hard over 13 appearances (five starts), posting a 7.39 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 31.2 innings. It's been more of the same thus far this season, with the fact Povse has already yielded a career-high six home runs certainly playing a significant part in his struggles. The 24-year-old right-hander is also struggling with his control more than he had at any other professional stop.

Mariners' Max Povse: Removed from rotation consideration
The Mariners optioned Povse to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
Povse's move to the minors likely leaves Erasmo Ramirez (lat), Marco Gonzales, Ariel Miranda and Hisashi Iwakuma (shoulder) to compete for two spots at the back of the Seattle rotation. The 24-year-old Povse will probably have to master the Triple-A level first before earning another look in the big leagues. He was roughed up in 31.2 innings with Tacoma in 2017, posting a 7.39 ERA and 1.70 WHIP.

Mariners' Max Povse: Will compete for rotation spot
Povse will enter camp as a starter, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
The Mariners were hoping to convert the 6-foot-8 Povse into a multi-inning reliever last season, but he struggled significantly, giving up five runs over 3.2 innings in the major-league pen and stumbling to a 7.39 ERA in 31.2 innings at Triple-A Tacoma. There's no reason to believe that Povse is a favorite to win a rotation spot out of camp, but if he performs well in the Triple-A rotation he could be a candidate to earn some starts later in the summer for a Mariners team which lacks quality starting pitching depth.

Mariners' Max Povse: Optioned to minors
Povse was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday.
The Mariners needed to clear a space on the roster for newly acquired David Phelps, and Povse proved to be the subsequent casualty. The 23-year-old has had a rough go over three appearances with Seattle this season, allowing five runs (three earned) over 3.2 innings out of the bullpen. He returns to Tacoma, where he'll have a chance to work out the kinks and improve upon his 4.33 ERA in the minors this year.

Mariners' Max Povse: Touched up in return to majors
Povse allowed two unearned runs on two hits over one inning in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Yankees.
Called up from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, the rookie was partly done in by Robinson Cano's throwing error, which allowed two runs to score. Povse has made three appearances overall with the Mariners this season, allowing five runs in 3.2 innings.

Mariners' Max Povse: Recalled from Tacoma
Povse was called up from Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday.
Povse has only appeared in two games for the Mariners this season, giving up three earned in less than an inning against Detroit and then hurling two scoreless innings just a week after that versus the Angels in late June. Interestingly, his last outing with Tacoma was disastrous, allowing four earned runs off six hits and a walk in just an inning of work. The top-10 prospect will slide into a low-leverage relief role during his time in the big leagues, while Sam Gaviglio heads down to Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Mariners' Max Povse: Optioned to minors
Povse was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
The Mariners were in need of more position depth with Nelson Cruz (knee) sustaining an injury in Saturday's game, so Povse will head back to the minors to open up a spot on the active roster for outfielder Boog Powell. Povse made two appearances in relief during his first stint with the big club, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk over 2.2 innings.

Mariners' Max Povse: Solid multi-inning stint in blowout win
Povse fired two scoreless innings in Friday's 10-0 win over the Angels, allowing three hits and a walk while recording a strikeout.
The promising rookie bounced back from a rough introduction to the big leagues at the hands of the Tigers on June 22 in which he was touched up for three earned runs on four hits in less than an inning. Friday's two-inning stint was representative of the type of role that the Mariners currently envision for Povse in their bullpen, as he carries the capacity for long-relief work after extensive starting experience in the minors.

Mariners' Max Povse: Rocked in big-league debut
Povse gave up three earned runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning in Thursday's 9-6 win over the Tigers. He also recorded a strikeout.
After making the leap up from Double-A Arkansas on June 18, Povse received a rather rude welcome to the majors. The towering right-hander was touched up for a 394-foot two-run shot by Miguel Cabrera and a run-scoring single by Justin Upton while firing 31 pitches overall after coming on for fellow rookie Andrew Moore in the eighth. Despite the rough debut, the Mariners have hopes for Povse as a potential multi-inning reliever, considering he's logged 62 starts at the minor-league level.

Mariners' Max Povse: Called up to big leagues
The Mariners purchased Povse's contract from Double-A Arkansas on Sunday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
In order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Povse, the Mariners designated Dillon Overton for assignment and optioned Rob Whalen to Triple-A Tacoma. Povse has worked exclusively as a starter with Arkansas, registering a 3.46 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 39 innings, but it's expected that he'll work in long relief while he remains with the big club.

Mariners' Max Povse: Returns from DL on Wednesday
Povse (hamstring) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two during 3.1 innings with Double-A Arkansas on Wednesday.
This marks Povse's first appearance since landing on the disabled list in late May. Although he started Wednesday's contest, the Mariners are in the process of converting the 23-year-old to a bullpen role. If all goes well, Povse could be on a fast track to the majors as a reliever.

Mariners' Max Povse: On DL with hamstring strain
Povse, who was being converted to a relief role at Double-A Arkansas, is on the minor-league DL with a hamstring strain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
He will obviously return in the coming weeks from the hamstring injury, but the bigger news is that the Mariners are converting Povse to a bullpen role. In seven starts at Double-A he had logged a 3.82 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 30:11 K:BB in 35.1 innings. The Mariners famously converted Edwin Diaz from a starter to a reliever at Double-A last season, and he needed just 10 appearances out of the bullpen before he was promoted to the big leagues and began his dominant 51.2-inning run that cemented his status as a top-15 closer heading into this season. Povse's stuff isn't quite as electric, but he could move quickly now that he is being developed as a reliever.

Mariners' Max Povse: Solid thus far in Double-A
Povse is 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 33.1 innings with Double-A Arkansas.
The towering righty got into at least the sixth inning in his first four starts before running into trouble against Springfield in an April 30 outing. Povse was touched up for seven earned runs in that appearance, but has otherwise given up one or no earned runs in four other trips to the mound. He's also done an excellent job of keeping the ball in the yard, surrendering just one home run while generating a 29:11 K:BB and a .210 BAA.
