  • Daniel Brito: Signs with Atlantic League team

Brito signed a contract Thursday with the Charleston Dirty Birds of the independent Atlantic League, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Brito is officially back in pro ball less than two years after suffering an on-field brain hemorrhage while playing in a game for the Triple-A affiliate of the Phillies on July 31, 2021. He is only 25 years old and might eventually get another shot with a major-league organization, but for now he'll play in independent ball.

  • Phillies' Daniel Brito: Reporting to spring training

Brito received clearance from doctors Wednesday to join the Phillies for minor-league spring training in Clearwater, Fla. next week, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Brito's future in baseball appeared to be in jeopardy after he collapsed on the field July 31 while playing for Triple-A Lehigh Valley before undergoing a pair of brain surgeries that left him hospitalized for 59 days, but the 24-year-old looks as though he'll be able to resume his playing career. Because he'll still have to clear several more medical checkpoints before getting the green light to play in games, Brito is unlikely to be ready for the start of the minor-league season. Still, Wednesday's news is undoubtedly a positive development for Brito.

  • Phillies' Daniel Brito: Resumes workouts

Brito, who was placed in a month-long induced coma last August after collapsing on the field in a game for Triple-A Lehigh Valley and subsequently undergoing two brain surgeries, resumed taking batting practice over the winter and remains hopeful to resume his playing career, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Doctors have yet to clear Brito to play again after he required a 59-day stay in an intensive care unit following a scary on-field incident that occurred July 31, but the 24-year-old Phillies farmhand is determined to make it back on the field. After Philadelphia re-signed him to a minor-league deal over the winter, Brito will be able to conduct his rehab under the supervision of the organization, despite having no clear timeline for if or when he'll be ready for full baseball activities. He had appeared in eight games for Lehigh Valley last season following his promotion from Double-A Reading, where he slashed .296/.363/.457 across 275 plate appearances.

  • Phillies' Daniel Brito: Transferred to rehab facility

Brito (undisclosed) was transferred a rehabilitation facility in Philadelphia earlier in the week.

Brito collapsed on the field while playing for Triple-A Lehigh Valley in late July. He required multiple surgeries and still has a long road of rehab ahead of him, but he's at least trending in the right direction.

  • Phillies' Daniel Brito: In stable condition

Brito is currently in stable condition and will undergo more medical testing, the Phillies announced Tuesday.

He suffered a medical incident during Saturday's game with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, leaving the park in an ambulance. Brito was once seen as one of the more promising teenagers in the Phillies' system, and he had put his name back on the map this year with stellar showings at Double-A (122 wRC+) and Triple-A (154 wRC+). His girlfriend and his mother have arrived from Venezuela and are by his side, per the report.

  • Phillies' Daniel Brito: Suffers medical incident

Saturday's game at Triple-A Lehigh Valley was suspended after Brito suffered a medical incident in the first inning, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Brito collapsed in the first inning Saturday and was taken off the field in an ambulance. He was transported to a local hospital, and an update on his condition hasn't been given.

  • Phillies' Daniel Brito: Wins defensive award

Brito was named the Phillies' Minor League Defender of the Month for April, the Phillies' official site reports.

The young second baseman won the award after making just one error in 94 chances for Low-A Lakewood. Brito's strong glove will give him plenty of chances to work on his bat, which has so far lagged behind. In 87 plate appearances so far this season, he's hitting just .205/.262/.321.

  • Phillies' Daniel Brito: Back at Low-A

Brito will open the year back at Low-A Lakewood, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports.

On the one hand, Brito already played 112 games at Low-A last season, but on the other hand, he was a below league average hitter (81 wRC+) and is still just 20 years old. Given his offensive aptitude (he's generally seen as one of the best pure hitters in the Phillies' system), he could easily post impressive numbers early on for the BlueClaws and earn a promotion to High-A in May or June.
