It was his third long ball of the year and first since April 6. The highly-touted rookie knocked 22 homers with 44 steals in the minors last year and he displayed that impressive power-speed combo Monday. Chourio is now slashing .259/.305/.444 through 59 plate appearances.

The right-fielder would then go on to score a second time while also driving in two runs, the first on a single and the second on a sacrifice fly. Chourio has now hit safely in four consecutive games and in 10 of 11 contests overall to open the season. Additionally, he's also recorded at least one RBI in all but three games.

Chourio has earned the prime spot by going 6-for-16 with three RBI, a stolen base and a 1:4 BB:K over his first four contests. Frelick, meanwhile, is off to a 1-for-13 start.

The 20-year-old has started all three games the Brewers have played to date, and he has hardly been overmatched, as he reached base twice in all three contests. Chourio hit ninth against right-handed starters Saturday and Sunday after hitting leadoff against a lefty in the opener, and that arrangement will likely continue for the time being. However, he could certainly find himself hitting higher against righties if he continues displaying the skills that made him one of the top prospects in baseball.

The Brewers trusted their top prospect to lead off in his MLB debut, and he was able to check off plenty of career firsts during Friday's victory. Chourio drew a four-pitch walk during his first big-league plate appearance, which was immediately followed by his first stolen base. He later tallied his first career hit on a single in the top of the fifth inning, and a fielder's choice allowed him to secure his first RBI in the seventh. The 20-year-old outfielder still needs to prove he can succeed consistently against MLB pitchers, but Friday's performance was certainly promising.

  Chourio is "in the mix" to make the Opening Day roster, according to manager Pat Murphy, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Murphy said that Joey Ortiz "has a good shot to make the club" during the same media scrum, so it's noteworthy that the team isn't publicly saying Chourio is likely to make the team. Chourio, who turned 20 earlier this month, is slashing .283/.313/.348 with zero home runs, zero steals, 10 strikeouts and two walks in 48 Cactus League plate appearances. If the Brewers want to give Ortiz regular playing time at third base, that would leave Garrett Mitchell, Christian Yelich, Sal Frelick and Joey Wiemer competing with Chourio for three starting outfield spots. There is no financial motivation for Milwaukee to send Chourio to Triple-A, but he still needs to earn a spot over the final week of spring training.

The long-term contract Chourio signed with the Brewers in late November puts him in prime position to open the season as the starting center fielder with the big club, and he is getting plenty of chances to show what he can do, as his 20 at-bats are more than any of his teammates have recorded to date.

Chourio recently agreed to a record-breaking deal for a prospect and will officially be under a long-term contract with the Brewers before ever taking an at-bat in the majors. The deal has $82 million guaranteed but can max out at $142.5 million over 10 years if he has his options exercised and reaches benchmarks in his contract. He slashed .282/.338/.467 with 22 home runs, 91 RBI, 88 runs and 43 steals over 128 games between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville last season, and he'll have a good chance to make the Brewers' Opening Day roster in 2024 following his new contract.

With a number of his fellow prospects graduating, Chourio now finds himself at or near the top of numerous sets of prospect rankings, and he is well on his way to justifying that with a .927 OPS four games into the current campaign.

Those six games should have absolutely no bearing on Chourio's prospect standing, as the 18-year-old took two lower levels of the minor leagues by storm this year. If anything, it's healthy for him to have gotten a first look at the more advanced pitching in Double-A. Chourio is an electric player, but he's very young and he has some swing-and-miss in his game that he needs to work through, so the Brewers would be wise not to rush him through the organization. His final line in 2022: .288/.342/.538 with 20 homers and 16 steals in 99 games. Spectacular.
