  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Solid showing in final start

Estes did not factor into the decision in the Athletics' extra-inning loss to the Mariners on Saturday, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two and also hit a batter. Estes put together a serviceable performance to wrap up his 2024 campaign, bouncing back from back-to-back outings in which he surrendered a combined 11 runs on 16 hits and a walk over five innings. The right-hander allowed one ball to leave the yard Saturday -- a fourth-inning solo home run by Cal Raleigh -- while also yielding a two-run single to Josh Rojas in the same frame. After getting his first taste of the big leagues in 2023 via a pair of starts, Estes worked to a 7-9 record, 5.01 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 127.2 innings over 25 appearances (24 starts) this season, tossing a shutout along the way.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Rocked by Yankees

Estes (7-9) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one over four innings to take the loss versus the Yankees on Sunday. Estes gave up home runs to Jasson Dominguez, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres, accounting for four of the five runs on his line. This was the third time in four September starts that Estes has given up at least four runs after doing so just once in July and August combined. He's now at a 4.99 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 90:25 K:BB through 122.2 innings over 24 outings (23 starts) this season. Estes is tentatively projected to make his last start of the year at Seattle.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Tagged with seventh loss

Estes (6-7) allowed four runs on six hits and struck out three without walking a batter over four innings, taking the loss Thursday versus the Mariners. Estes coughed up a pair of homers to Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez, making it the fifth time this season he's allowed multiple long balls in a start. Estes has now given up at least one home run in seven straight starts, but he has pitched well over that span. Thursday's start ended an impressive run of nine straight outings in which he didn't allow more than three runs. The 22-year-old has a 4.46 ERA through 111 innings in his rookie campaign.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Works out of bullpen Friday

Estes came on in relief in Friday's 5-4 win over the Angels, collecting a hold while allowing two hits and two walks over 2.2 scoreless innings. He didn't strike out a batter. After making each of his previous 13 appearances with the Athletics this season as a starter, Estes worked out of the bullpen for the first time with Oakland bringing Paul Blackburn (foot) back from the injured list Friday. Since Blackburn was making his first start with the big club in more than two months, he was limited to five innings and 72 pitches in his return, prompting the Athletics to turn to Estes in relief on his normal four days' rest. The Athletics cleared up their logjam in the rotation to some degree by optioning Hogan Harris to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, but Estes could still end up sticking in the bullpen if Oakland elects to proceed with Osvaldo Bido as its fifth starter.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Cruises to fourth win

Estes (4-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out five. Estes began his start in an early hole after he allowed a one-out homer by Trea Turner in the first. However, the A's provided 10 runs prior to Estes being removed from the game, ultimately tallying 18 runs to allow the young righty to cruise to his fourth win. It was a nice bounce-back effort for Estes, who had allowed eight runs over just 1.2 innings during his previous start, which had come on the heels of his first complete-game shutout. Estes enters the All-Star break with a 5.29 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 49 strikeouts over 12 starts spanning 63 innings.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Crushed in Boston

Estes (3-4) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering eight runs on seven hits and a walk over just 1.2 innings as the A's were downed 12-9 by the Red Sox. He struck out one. Every Boston starting position player has at least one hit and one run by the end of the second inning, chasing Estes from the game in the process after 55 pitches (38 strikes). It was a hard crash back down to earth after he twirled a shutout against the Angels in his last start, but Tuesday's outing is more representative of the 22-year-old right-hander's level right now. Estes will carry a 5.53 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 44:14 K:BB through 57 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Philadelphia.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Hurls first complete-game shutout

Estes (3-3) earned the win over the Angels on Thursday, allowing four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in a complete-game shutout. Estes breezed through the Angels' lineup and lucked out with double-play balls in three of his nine innings of work. The 22-year-old right-hander induced 15 swings and misses on the night en route to the first complete game of his big-league career, and he needed only 92 pitches to get the job done. It marked Estes' first win since June 5 against the Mariners and the third time in his last six starts that he's gone at least six frames. He's also allowed two or fewer runs in three consecutive outings.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Chased early Sunday

Estes allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Twins in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader. Both Estes and Twins starter Chris Paddack were hit hard in the early innings, and neither completed three frames. This was Estes' shortest outing of the season, and it's the first time in four starts he's given up more than three runs. The right-hander is now at a 5.97 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB through 34.2 innings over seven starts. His next outing is projected to come at home in a rematch versus the Twins.

Estes and the Athletics won't play Saturday against the Twins after the game was postponed due to inclement weather,, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. • Athletics' Joey Estes: Falls to Padres on Monday

Estes (2-2) took the loss against San Diego on Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings. Estes managed to get through two scoreless frames but gave up one run in each of his final three innings. Two of the tallies came on solo homers -- one by Jake Cronenworth and the other by Fernando Tatis. Estes had allowed just one run on three hits over 11.1 frames across his previous two starts coming into Monday, and he's allowed one or zero runs in half of his six MLB starts so far this season. That should give him plenty of buffer room in holding onto a big-league starting role, especially considering the injuries that have hit the Athletics' rotation.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Excellent in win

Estes (2-1) allowed one hit and struck out five without walking a batter over 6.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Mariners on Wednesday. Estes retired 18 straight batters to start the game before giving up a leadoff double to J.P. Crawford in the seventh inning. This was easily the best start of Estes' young career, and he's now allowed one run or fewer in three of his five outings in 2024. He's still at a 4.67 ERA, but his 0.96 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB over 27 innings are more indicative of the quality of his pitching. He's projected to make his next start on the road in San Diego.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Gives team five solid frames

Estes allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Wednesday. The only run Estes allowed came in the fourth inning, when he began the frame by hitting Isaac Paredes with a pitch before serving up a run-scoring triple off the bat of Brandon Lowe. Promisingly, Estes recovered to retire the next three batters without allowing Lowe to cross the plate, and he finished off his outing with another scoreless inning. Though Estes holds a 6.10 ERA through 20.2 frames this season, he's held his own in three of his four starts -- the poor earned-run average is largely due to an eight-run, 3.2-inning blowup against Houston in his second appearance.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Lit up in second start

Estes (1-1) was hit with the loss Thursday against the Astros, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks over 3.2 innings while striking out four. Estes struggled with his command out of the gate and was lucky to get through the first two innings unscathed despite allowing four batters to reach over that span. However, the traffic would finally catch up with the 22-year-old right-hander in the third after he issued a walk to Kyle Tucker to open the frame, which would eventually lead to six runs coming across for Houston in the inning. Estes would surrender another two runs in the fourth and actually allowed the leadoff man to reach in all four innings in which he appeared. It was a disappointing performance after he threw just 61 pitches over five frames in his first outing and did not walk a batter.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Getting another start

Estes is slated to start Thursday's game against the Astros in Houston, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. He'll be awarded his second straight turn through the rotation after striking out five and allowing just one run over five innings last weekend in Seattle following his call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Estes could be in line for an extended run in the big-league rotation with Paul Blackburn (foot) recently going on the injured list and with Alex Wood (shoulder) also at risk of being deactivated.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Recalled by Oakland

The Athletics recalled Estes from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of his start against the Mariners on Saturday. Despite a 2-3 record with a 6.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in Triple-A this season, Estes will take to the mound for the Athletics on Saturday in his season debut. The 22-year-old right-hander started in two games for Oakland last season, going 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 10 innings. To make room for Estes, the Athletics optioned left-hander Easton Lucas to Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Fans five in final start

Estes worked 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters. Estes was shaky early, giving up a solo homer to Edouard Julien in the first inning and yielding another run in the second. The right-hander mostly settled in from there, holding the Twins scoreless across the third to fifth frames before being charged with another run following his departure in the sixth. Estes threw 75 pitches in the start, so this was presumably his final appearance of the campaign. If that's the case, he'll finish with 7.20 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 10 innings during his first taste of the majors. He'll look to earn a rotation spot coming out of spring training in 2024.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Hammered by M's in MLB debut

Estes (0-1) took the loss Wednesday as the A's were downed 6-3 by the Mariners, surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out two. Called up earlier in the day to make his big-league debut. Estes got a rude welcome from Seattle's hitters, as Dominic Canzone slugged a two-run shot off the 21-year-old righty in the second inning before Julio Rodriguez (hand) and Cal Raleigh launched back-to-back solo shots in the fifth. Estes could end up having an impact on the race for the AL West title even though he took the loss. He hit two batters with pitches, including Rodriguez in the third inning, and the M's superstar was sent for precautionary X-rays after the game. The A's haven't yet indicated whether Estes will remain in the rotation for one more start next week before the season is over.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Summoned for debut

The Athletics selected Estes' contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Estes is set to make his major-league debut Wednesday with a start in Oakland against the Mariners. The right-hander has collected a 3.74 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 131:43 K:BB over 137 innings between Double-A Midland and Las Vegas this season. Estes is a nice prospect but isn't a great streaming option for his debut.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Set to join major-league club

The Athletics plan to call up Estes from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Estes was dealt from Atlanta to Oakland in March 2022 as part of the trade that sent Matt Olson to Atlanta. Estes has spent the 2023 campaign with Double-A Midland and Las Vegas, posting a 3.74 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 137 innings over 27 appearances (23 starts) in the minors. The 21-year-old will have an opportunity to make a late-season impression for the rebuilding Athletics. Since he made his final start with Las Vegas on Friday, he could slot into the big-league rotation as soon as Wednesday against the Mariners in Oakland.
