Mets' Mark Vientos: On bench again Thursday
Vientos is out of the starting lineup again Thursday versus the Cubs. Vientos has now started only four of a possible eight games since his May 17 promotion from Triple-A Syracuse. Daniel Vogelbach will handle DH duties and bat seventh Thursday against the Cubs and right-hander Kyle Hendricks. Brett Baty is at third base and batting fifth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Absent from lineup
Vientos is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Vientos has now started four games and been on the bench three times since his promotion a week ago. All three times he's been out of the lineup have been against righties, and Daniel Vogelbach has been the designated hitter in each case as he will be Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: On bench for matinee
Vientos is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Guardians. Vientos is 2-for-8 with a home run, a walk and three RBI in two games since being promoted Wednesday, and he'll step out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's twin bill. Daniel Vogelbach will serve as the designated hitter versus Cleveland righty Tanner Bibee.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Not in lineup Thursday
Vientos is not in the lineup Thursday versus the Rays. Vientos slugged a two-run homer Wednesday in his season debut with the Mets, building on his blistering start to the year at Triple-A Syracuse, but he'll head to the bench for Thursday's series finale at Citi Field. Daniel Vogelbach will serve as New York's designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Homers in 2023 debut
Vientos went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run against the Rays in an extra-inning win Wednesday. Vientos was called up from Triple-A Syracuse prior to the contest and provided a big spark in his first major-league game of the campaign, putting the Mets on the board with a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning. The long ball was the second of his big-league career, as he went deep once over 36 at-bats with the Mets last season. Vientos was dominating in the minors this year prior to his call-up, slashing .333/.416/.688 with 11 doubles, 13 homers and 37 RBI over 166 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Officially recalled from minors
The Mets recalled Vientos from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. Vientos earned the promotion by putting together a 1.104 OPS with 13 home runs across 166 plate appearances at Syracuse. He might initially only start against lefties but could certainly play his way into an everyday role. Vientos is included in the starting nine against a lefty (Josh Fleming) in Wednesday's game against the Rays, manning third base and batting eighth while the lefty-hitting Brett Baty takes a seat.... Mets' Mark Vientos: Hits way to majors
The Mets plan to recall Vientos from Triple-A Syracuse prior to Wednesday's game against the Rays, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. New York is hoping the 23-year-old can provide a lift to a sputtering lineup, as Vientos had been one of the top performers in the International League this season with a 1.104 OPS, 11.9 percent walk rate and 20.5 percent strikeout rate over 166 plate appearances. The slugger could initially serve as a short-side platoon option at third base or designated hitter, though it wouldn't be surprising if he eventually eclipsed Daniel Vogelbach as the Mets' preferred option at DH. Vogelbach has drawn walks at a prolific rate (16.8 percent) this season but is offering little power production (.119 ISO), an element the Mets could desperately use in their lineup.... See More ... Mets' Mark Vientos: Continuing to rake at Triple-A
Vientos is slashing .364/.446/.764 through 15 games with Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season with four doubles, six home runs, 14 runs and 17 RBI. The 23-year-old nearly slugged his way onto the big-league roster this spring, and Vientos has carried over his hot hitting into the regular season. Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty have already been promoted to the Mets' roster, but it might take an injury to one of the team's 1B/DH options for Vientos to join them in New York despite his impressive production.... Mets' Mark Vientos: Optioned to Syracuse
The Mets optioned Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. Vientos appeared to have a good chance to win a bench spot with the Mets out of the Grapefruit League, but the 23-year-old will begin the season in the International League. He could be an option for New York if there's an injury or if the Mets are looking for offense in the summer months, particularly against left-handed pitching.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Clubs two homers Saturday
Vientos went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. Getting the start at third base and hitting second in the order, Vientos launched a two-run shot off minor-league reliever Justin Evans in the fourth inning before taking potential Miami closer Dylan Floro deep in the fifth for a three-run blast, with both homers being no-doubters to straightaway center field. Vientos doesn't appear to have much of a chance at winning the starting job at the hot corner for Opening Day with both Eduardo Escobar and Brett Baty ahead of him in the pecking order, but he's doing what he can to win a spot on the big-league bench. The 23-year-old prospect has gone 7-for-21 to begin his spring, with four of the hits (two doubles plus Saturday's home runs) going for extra bases.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Misses wild-card roster
Vientos is absent from the Mets' roster for the NL Wild Card Series against the Padres on Friday, Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports reports. Vientos made his big-league debut Sept. 11 and won't be included on New York's roster to open the playoffs. He played in 16 games down the stretch and had a .167/.268/.278 slash line with one home run and three RBI.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Earns first career call-up
The Mets will call up Vientos from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Contact concerns may ultimately prevent Vientos from making the most of his considerable power, but he hits the ball hard enough that he may be able to find success despite the whiffs. That's been the case for him in 101 games for Triple-A Syracuse this year, as he's struck out 28.6 percent of the time but still managed to hit .283/.361/.524 with 24 home runs. He isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins but could earn at-bats at third base or designated hitter down the stretch, especially against lefties.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Scratched with headache
Vientos was scratched from Triple-A Syracuse's lineup Tuesday due to a headache, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Rumors of a call-up began to surface after Vientos was scratched from Tuesday's lineup, but he just experienced a headache during batting practice. The 21-year-old is one of New York's top prospects and has a .282/.359/.523 slash line with 23 home runs and 73 RBI at Triple-A this year, but the organization has yet to promote him for his first taste of the big leagues.... Mets' Mark Vientos: Managing knee discomfort
Vientos was scratched from Friday's lineup at Triple-A Syracuse due to knee discomfort, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Vientos has been productive in Syracuse since the start of May, slashing .320/.400/.600 with six home runs, three doubles, 14 runs and 14 RBI over 20 games during that time. The team doesn't sound too concerned about the 22-year-old's knee issue, so he should tentatively be considered day-to-day.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Flashing power
Vientos has gone 8-for-22 (.364) over his last six games for Triple-A Syracuse with four home runs and seven RBI. Considered one of the organization's top prospects, Vientos has had a brutal start to the season at Syracuse, but he seems to be finding his groove. Strikeouts remain an issue for Vientos -- he's fanned seven times in his last six games, and has a 30.0 percent strikeout rate through 100 plate appearances on the year -- but his .212/.320/.459 slash line will rise quickly with an extended hot streak. He posted a .282/.354/.584 line between Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton over 83 games in 2021 with 25 homers.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Struggling in Triple-A
Vientos is hitting just .167/.282/.303 with one homer across 21 games so far this season for Triple-A Syracuse. After he hit 25 homers in just 83 games across Double-A and Triple-A last year, expectations were high for Vientos entering this season, but he simply hasn't delivered so far. If there's a bright side to be scraped from his stats, it's that he's drawn six walks in his last six games -- a big improvement from the four he managed in the first 15 -- but the 22-year-old's prospect luster has always stemmed from his massive raw power, and that's simply been missing in action. He's striking out at a career-high clip (32.1 percent), and his 66.7 percent groundball rate as well as his 23.1 percent flyball rate are well out of line with his career norms. It sure is hard to hit the ball over the fence often when you're hitting it on the ground two-thirds of the time. The good news is that Vientos has a lengthy minor-league track record of elevating the ball, so look for him to tweak his swing and get back to what he does best.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Moves to minor-league camp
Vientos was optioned to minor-league camp Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Vientos got to spend some time in big-league camp as a member of the 40-man roster, but he's not quite ready to push for an active roster spot. He's only played 11 Triple-A games, but he could make his case for a promotion with a strong start at that level this season.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Rewarded with 40-man roster spot
Vientos was added to the Mets' 40-man roster Friday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. Vientos seems to get overshadowed at times by Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio, but he's probably going to beat them to the majors and he has big-time power potential. His strikeout rate will likely always be a little high, but he could hit 30-plus home runs if he can make contact at a passable clip.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Mark Vientos: Back in action at Double-A
Vientos (undisclosed) rejoined the Double-A Binghamton lineup Monday after a two-week absence and has gone 3-for-12 with a home run, a walk and two RBI in his first three games back in action. Binghamton never officially placed Vientos on the 7-day injured list, but he was believed to be inactive as a result of COVID-19-related protocols. The 21-year-old didn't take long to make an impact in his return, homering in his second start back with the Rumble Ponies. Vientos is hitting .280 with 21 home runs and 54 RBI in 65 games on the campaign.... See More ... See Less
