Jake Rogers emerged as Detroit's primary catcher in 2023, thanks in large part to his power production. The 28-year-old mashed 21 home runs in 107 games. He homered roughly once every 16 at-bats, though he was very much a boom-or-bust option at the plate. Rogers batted just .221 and struck out 32.3% of the time. Heading into 2024, fantasy managers won't complain too loudly about a low batting average if Rogers continues to hit the ball over the wall. With a fly-ball rate of nearly 42% last year, the backstop has the look of a player who is certainly trying to rack up home runs. While this leaves Rogers as a fairly one-dimensional option, there are a few reasons to think he could take another step forward. For one, he will be another year removed from the Tommy John surgery that cost him all of the 2022 season. Secondly, the Tigers don't really have anyone on hand to push Rogers for playing time, with journeyman Carson Kelly set to serve as the backup catcher. Rogers has his limitations, but he can be a valuable fantasy asset if he continues to hit for power at a thin position.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Hits grand slam in win

Rogers went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Blue Jays. Rogers broke the game open with a grand slam off Trevor Richards in the sixth inning. The long ball was his first since June 29, as he has been sharing catching duties with Carson Kelly. On the year, the 29-year-old is hitting .204 with seven home runs, 20 RBI and 28 runs scored across 199 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Starting Saturday

Rogers is starting at catcher and batting sixth in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays. Carson Kelly got the start in Friday's contest with Rogers on the bench, but the two will flip flop Saturday. To date, Kelly has appeared in 56 games, while Rogers will be at 60 games following his start Saturday. With the two catchers splitting time fairly evenly, their fantasy ceilings will remain capped. Rogers hasn't helped his cause much when he's been in the lineup, as he's sitting with a .597 OPS, down from the .730 mark he posted last year.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Sitting Saturday

Rogers isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Carson Kelly will get the nod behind the plate and bat sixth.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Resting Thursday

Rogers is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Guardians, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Rogers had started behind the plate in three of the Tigers' last four contests, but he'll take a seat Thursday while the two clubs wrap up their series with a day game after a night game. Carson Kelly will draw the start at catcher.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Returns to lineup Sunday

Rogers is starting at catcher and batting eighth in Sunday's game against the Reds. Rogers was out of the lineup Saturday, marking his third absence in the last four games, but he's back in there Sunday in place of Carson Kelly. Based on the recent playing time, it seems Kelly has pulled ahead as Detroit's top catching option, though Rogers could swing things back in his favor if he starts driving the ball over the wall more frequently.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Sitting again Saturday

Rogers isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Reds. Rogers has tallied a base hit in three of his last four games, but he will now take a seat for the third time in Detroit's last four contests while Carson Kelly picks up another start behind the plate.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Idle Friday

Rogers isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Friday's game against the Reds. Rogers went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs during Detroit's loss to Minnesota on Thursday. He'll now get a breather during Friday's series opener while Carson Kelly starts at catcher, batting fourth.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Getting Wednesday off

Rogers isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Goes deep in loss

Rogers went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and three total RBI in Saturday's 6-5, 10-inning loss to the Angels. Rogers delivered a key blast in the top of the sixth inning to put the Tigers up 5-2, but Los Angeles scored the final four runs of the contest to spoil his effort. The Detroit backstop is now up to six long balls this season in 51 games, which is a step back from last year's pace, when he swatted a career-high 21 homers in 107 contests. Rogers is still capable of getting hot quickly, though he's splitting time behind the plate with Carson Kelly, which impacts either player's ability to sustain much momentum.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Sitting again Thursday

Rogers is not in Thursday's lineup against the Angels. Rogers will sit for the second straight game, perhaps getting an extended breather after collecting just three hits across his last 29 at-bats. Carson Kelly is behind the dish and will hit ninth.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Hitting bench Monday

Rogers is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. Rogers will hit the bench after he started behind the plate both of the past two days and in three of the past four games overall. The 29-year-old is slashing just .150/.171/.375 overall in June, but he appears to have worked his way back into a timeshare at catcher with Carson Kelly nonetheless.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Back on bench Wednesday

Rogers is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. Rogers will retreat to the bench after he started at catcher in both of the Tigers' last two games, going 2-for-8 with a home run and three RBI. The 29-year-old is slashing .226/.284/.387 overall for the season and still seems to be part of a timeshare at catcher with Carson Kelly, who gets the starting nod Wednesday.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Powers offense with solo shots

Rogers went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs in Monday's 2-1 win over the Rangers. Rogers had half of Detroit's hits and provided all of the team's offense in the narrow win. The catcher is now up to four home runs across 38 games this season, and this was his first multi-homer effort. He has some work to do to match the career-high 21 long balls he recorded in 2023, though as he displayed Monday, he can rack up home runs quickly when he's dialed in at the plate.

  • Tigers' Jake Rogers: Resting for second game

Rogers is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Rogers will take a seat for the second game of the day after he was behind the plate for all nine innings of the Tigers' 8-0 win earlier in the day. He went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI and has now reached base at least once in each of his last five starts. Carson Kelly will draw the start for the second game of the day, but Rogers has performed well enough of late to at the very least keep himself in a timeshare at catcher.
