Koerner was designated for assignment earlier in the week but will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 27-year-old spent most of the season at Triple-A and posted a 3.39 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 64:23 K:BB over 77 innings.

The Yankees selected Koerner's contract from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday and optioned him to the affiliate.
Though he won't be joining the Yankees for their regular-season finale Sunday against the Rays, Koerner will rejoin the 40-man roster after a spot opened up with first baseman Luke Voit (knee) moving to the 60-day IL. Contrary to a previous report, Koerner remained with the major-league club across the last several days and made a relief appearance in Friday's win over the Twins. He allowed no hits and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless inning but will now head back to the minor-league club, where he's recorded a 2.95 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 61 innings across 16 appearances (13 starts) this year.

Koerner's contract was selected by the Yankees in early August, and he made his major-league debut Aug. 3.
