Player Outlook
The Red Sox called up David Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester early in April when Trevor Story sustained a shoulder injury. The utility infielder wasn't expected to be a regular, but Story's injury lingered, and Vaughn Grissom's groin/hamstring left a hole at second base that was never adequately filled. Hamilton answered the call, playing 56 games at shortstop and 36 at second base. His walk rate wasn't as good as in the minors, but an elevated BABIP allowed Hamilton to take advantage of his base-stealing prowess - he finished second on the team with 33 steals in 98 games. His season ended in late August due to a fractured finger, but Hamilton made a greater impact than his .248/.303/.395 line might suggest. The club is expected to go with a Story/Grissom middle infield, so Hamilton will have to win a utility backup role. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is unlikely to waste a roster spot on a pinch-running specialist.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Steals three bases Thursday

Hamilton started at second base and went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run scored in Thursday's spring game against Minnesota. Hamilton now has eight stolen bases in 19 Grapefruit League games. Boston's decision to assign Vaughn Grissom to minor-league camp Wednesday leaves Hamilton and Kristian Campbell as the last two candidates standing for the starting gig at the keystone, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Chad Jennings of The Athletic that final roster decisions may not be made until 48 hours before Opening Day. "Maybe Monterrey," he said, referencing next week's pair of exhibition games in Mexico. "We're getting close, but we're not in a rush." Jennings' report also includes a roster projection that has Hamilton making the roster, either in a platoon at second base or as a utility player that gets a lot of playing time off the bench. Jennings also indicates that both the industry and the Red Sox seem to value Hamilton more than his fantasy profile suggests.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Inside track for 2B?

Hamilton has made the strongest case this spring to earn the starting job at second base, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is expected to make a decision on a primary starter at second base in a few days, but all signs point to Hamilton. Not only his spring numbers, which dwarf his competitors, Kristian Campbell and Vaughn Grissom, but also in how the manager speaks about Hamilton. "The experience matters, but at the same time we know the athlete," Cora said of Hamilton. "I don't want to get ahead of myself, all of them, they can play the position. It's just a matter of, how are we going to do it, what we're looking for." If Hamilton becomes the primary second baseman, he will be a hot fantasy draft commodity for those looking for steals. He stole 33 bags in 2024 for Boston and 50 or greater in three minor league seasons from 2021 to 2023. This supposes that Alex Bregman will play third base with Rafael Devers moving to DH.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Starts at short in spring opener

Hamilton started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's spring game against Tampa Bay. Hamilton is caught up in a roster battle that also involves prospect Kristian Campbell and Vaughn Grissom, who started at second base Saturday. Trevor Story will be the starting shortstop, so Hamilton needs to make the team either as a starter at second base or more likely as a utility infielder. A case can be made for any of the players competing at second base, but it all goes up into flames if Alex Bregman becomes the club's starter at second base. Hamilton immediately showed his value, leading off the first inning with a walk and a steal before scoring on a Marcelo Mayer single.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Could be used in outfield

Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Hamilton may occasionally play in the outfield this season, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Cora added that the Red Sox would like Hamilton to be as versatile as possible for the sake of roster flexibility. The 27-year-old has been used exclusively at second base and shortstop throughout his MLB career, though he has started eight games in center field in the minors.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Goes on IL with fractured finger

The Red Sox placed Hamilton on the 10-day injured list Thursday due to a left index finger fracture, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Hamilton suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays and subsequent X-rays revealed the fracture. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Hamilton has been told it's typically a 4-to-6 week injury, but he's hoping to be back in 2-to-3 weeks if his pain tolerance allows. Nick Sogard is taking Hamilton's spot on the roster and will be an option for starts at second base along with Romy Gonzalez and Mickey Gasper.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Two thefts in Sunday's win

Hamilton went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, two stolen bases and two total runs scored in Sunday's 7-2 win over the Rangers. Hamilton sat out the first two games versus the Rangers after going 0-for-12 with five strikeouts over three contests versus the Mariners earlier in the week. The reset seemed to help, as the infielder put together his first multi-hit effort since July 14. His recent slump has taken some of the wind out of his sails -- he's at a .253/.307/.395 slash line with five home runs, 28 steals, 19 RBI, 38 runs scored, 13 doubles and a triple through 251 plate appearances. Hamilton will need to find more consistency at the plate to avoid ceding more work to Nick Sogard or Romy Gonzalez.

Hamilton went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a caught stealing in Thursday's 7-0 win over Oakland. Hamilton doubled and scored in the first inning then singled and was caught stealing an inning later. It was the second time this season Hamilton has been thrown out on a steal attempt, but he's been successful 23 times. The infielder, whose hot bat from late May and early June had cooled recently, has multiple hits in two of the last three games.

Hamilton went 1-for-5 with a walk, an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases against the Marlins in Thursday's 6-5 extra-innings victory. Hamilton scored Boston's first two runs of the contest, then collected a go-ahead RBI on a groundout in the 12th frame. The infielder also recorded two swipes of third base, moving him up to fourth in MLB with 23 stolen bases (on 24 attempts) for the season. Though Hamilton has seen his playing time dry up a bit of late, he has continued to produce fairly well. Despite hitting just .200 over his past 35 at-bats, he's recorded a home run, five RBI, eight runs and nine stolen bases during that stretch.

  • Red Sox's David Hamilton: Homers in win

Hamilton started at second base and went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Monday's 7-6 win over Toronto. Hamilton belted his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth inning that narrowed the Red Sox's deficit to 6-4. It continued a renaissance that began mid-May -- Hamilton has an .869 OPS with 17 steals, eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 13 RBI over the last 36 games. The offensive production has led to Hamilton being a lineup regular, typically at shortstop but sometimes at second base, with the latter an unsettled position at this stage.
