The 22-year-old outfielder has been on the prospect radar for a while now, but his power has not developed as the Phillies hoped, which is why they left him unprotected. He has a decent hit tool and is a plus runner with the potential to offer plus defense in center field. Tocci notched a .294/.346/.381 slash line with three home runs and four steals in 130 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He will likely serve as a fourth or fifth outfielder for the Rangers this season. They will need to keep him on the active roster all year, otherwise he will be exposed to waivers and offered back to the Phillies.
Tocci was promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday, Corey Seidman of CSN Philadelphia reports.
Tocci, who turns 22-years-old this month, earned the promotion after hitting .307/.362/.398 with two home runs and four stolen bases in 430 at-bats for Double-A Reading this season. He is likely to earn a 40-man roster spot this winter after being left exposed in the Rule 5 draft last offseason. Tocci would certainly be selected this winter if he was available to other teams in the Rule 5 draft again.
Tocci is hitting .324/.397/.414 with four doubles and three triples in 111 at-bats for Double-A Reading.
Tocci is in his sixth season of minor-league ball, but he's still just 21. He's yet to develop any power, as evidenced by his career-high of four homers, but he is still young enough that he could add some additional muscle to his frame. At present, he looks like a future fourth or fifth outfielder in the majors given his offensive profile.
